Order on Jessica Lal case convict's parole plea reserved

New Delhi, June 16 (IANS): The Delhi High Court Monday reserved its order on the parole plea of Manu Sharma, who is serving a life term in the Jessica Lal murder case, so that he could appear for post-graduation examinations in human rights.

Justice Sunita Gupta reserved the order after police filed their response on Sharma's parole plea. The court last Wednesday issued notice to police.

Sharma's counsel told the court his exams will commence from June 19. He also submitted that the Delhi government rejected his application for parole June 6.

Parole is temporary release of a convict from prison before the end of his sentence, subject to certain conditions.

Manu Sharma, 36, shot dead the 34-year-old ramp model - working as a celebrity waitress at the Tamarind Court restaurant of socialite Bina Ramani in south Delhi's Mehrauli area - April 29, 1999, after she refused to serve him a drink. Manu Sharma was sentenced to life imprisonment by the high court December 2006. The life term was upheld by the Supreme Court.
