Cairo, July 3 (IANS): A protester was killed in clashes between supporters of deposed Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi and security forces in Cairo Thursday, media reported.
The protesters gathered in Giza area to mark the first anniversary of Morsi's ouster exactly one year ago, Xinhua reported citing the online edition of state-run Ahram newspaper. The report said security forces used tear gas to disperse Morsi's supporters.
Egyptian police were on alert on the day the former Islamist president was removed by the army a year ago due to mass protests against him and his Muslim Brotherhood group.
Meanwhile, many squares were declared off-limits such as Cairo's central Tahrir Square, the epicentre of the January 2011 revolution that toppled President Hosni Mubarak.
Early Thursday, a suspected militant was killed when a homemade bomb went off while he was preparing it in Cairo's Kerdasa village. Another one was wounded in the blast.
Also in Cairo, another homemade bomb planted inside a car went off near a military hospital in the Abbasiya area in northeastern Cairo.
No group has claimed responsibility for the blasts yet.
