Maruti violence anniversary: Prohibitory orders in Manesar

Gurgaon, July 16 (IANS): District Magistrate Shekhar Vidyarthi Wednesday imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC till July 19 around Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant, two days before the second anniversary of the violence there.

Gatherings, protests and public meetings, without prior permission from the administration, have been banned.

On July 18, 2012, there was violence after a suspended Maruti Udyog worker allegedly slapped a supervisor at the Manesar plant.

Workers ran amok, setting fire to a wing in the building. A senior executive was killed and over 100 people were injured.

The company sacked 2,500 workers after the violence and the plant was closed for over a month.

As many as 147 workers, including union leaders, were jailed and are facing trial.

The sacked workers staged protest on the first anniversary last year.

Former workers want their jobs back and are demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation or an inquiry by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court into the incident.

The plant is now functioning with new staff.
