2010 Jama Masjid attack: Fresh charge sheet filed against Waqas


New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS): The Delhi Police Monday filed two fresh sets of charges in a court here Monday in a separate case related to 2010 Jama Masjid terror attack against suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operative Zia-ur-Rahman alias Waqas.

The fresh charge sheets were filed before Additional Sessions Judge Reetesh Singh.

On Sep 19, 2010, two suspected IM operatives had fired at a bus from which foreign tourists were descending near the mosque, leaving two Taiwanese tourists injured. Also, there was a mild explosion from a bomb fitted in the car left in that area, police said.

Police has registered two separate case against various IM men including module co-founder Yasin Bhatkal, its chief Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal.

Yasin Bhatkal was charge sheeted in the case April 19 with his accomplice Asadullah Akhtar. Till now, police have arrested 24 accused in the case and filed three separate charge sheets in both the cases. Riyaz Bhatkal and Iqbal Bhatkal are, however, on the run. 

Police told court that Waqas entered into criminal conspiracy along with other IM men to carry out the terrorist act in Delhi at Jama Masjid with the intent to threaten the unity, integrity, security and sovereignty of India and with intent to strike terror in people in India by causing injury to people and damage to and destruction of property.

"Being a member of proscribed terrorists outfit, the accused (Waqas) voluntarily entered into India and Jama Masjid and planting of an improvised explosive device (IED)," police said in one of the charge sheets filed in the case.

Police has charge sheeted Waqas for attempt to murder, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code as well as some sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act.
