Mangalore, Sep 14: Though the city had moderate rains this year, the low-lying areas are facing dearth of drinking water. It is quite surprising to know about drinking water shortage since Thumbe vented dam which supplies water to the city is full. So the water crisis could largely be owing to administerial and distribution problems rather than anything else.
There has been no water supply in the city for the last three days. However, this is largely because there has been continuous power failure in the last couple of days owing to which water could not be pumped in. In most of the places, there was no power supply throughout the day on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meanwhile Mescom sources said that the city is in need of five substations. But it has been finding it difficult to identify suitable locations and acquire land for the same. There is also a complaint that the pumps used for water supply are pretty old and either need to be repaired or replaced.
There is an outcry from the people too that MCC should supply water on everyday basis rather than the existing once-in-two-days system. The common opinion is that since water is supplied only on alternative days, people are collecting water in huge measures in big containers, over-head and underground water tanks etc.
Whatever the reasons may be, the plight of the people is inexplicable. While it is raining cats and dogs in the city in the last two days, taps are running dry without water supply. Though there is plenty of water outside, there is dearth of water within the houses.
