Kailash Satyarthi of India shares Nobel with Pak's Malala

Oslo, Oct 10 (IANS): Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi Friday shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Pakistani teenager Malala Yousufzai who stood up to the Taliban and survived a near-fatal shooting.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize for 2014 to Satyarthi and Malala Yousufzai "for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education," a statement said.

Showing great personal courage, 60-year-old Kailash Satyarthi, "maintaining Gandhi's tradition, has headed various forms of protests and demonstrations, all peaceful, focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain. He has also contributed to the development of important international conventions on children's rights".

Satyarthi runs the Bachpan Bachao Andolan NGO that works for child rights, specially bonded labour.

Despite her youth, the committee said, Malala has "already fought for several years for the right of girls to education, and has shown by example that children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations".

"This she has done under the most dangerous circumstances. Through her heroic struggle she has become a leading spokesperson for girls' rights to education," it added.

Malala was shot by a Taliban gunman as she took a bus home from school in Pakistan's northwest region in October 2012. She was flown to Britain for specialised treatment shortly after the attack.

The Nobel Committee regards it "as an important point for a Hindu and a Muslim, an Indian and a Pakistani, to join in a common struggle for education and against extremism".

It highlighted that there are 168 million child labourers around the world today. In 2000 the figure was 78 million higher. The world has come closer to the goal of eliminating child labour.

The contrast is for everyone to see. Here is a person who consciously devoted a major part of his adult life, that too after understanding the ramifications and the effort required to make an impact on the chosen field and on the other hand , we have a kid, who merely on circumstances became a celebrity of sort and receives the Nobel prize for peace.

Kailash has worked and made an impact on the ground level. Nobody knew him because that was not his intention, and he didn't succumb to political machinations either. Whatever the political undertones in awarding the Nobel prize, we should have mechanisms to understand and support people who are putting efforts in noble issues. This is the crux of the issue we are facing at the moment. We are happy seeing things on a smokescreen, and we don't want to dwelve in to the real issues. People like Kailash should have an upper hand in policy making and taking decisions. Our law should encourage good people, while discouraging the bad apples. In our current system, good people are paying the price for the actions of bad elements. This has to change, and if Nobel prize becomes a catalyst for it, at least Alfred Nobel might have a sigh of relief amid the politicisation of a his good.

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY THEY GIVEN NOBEL AWARDS TO MALALA? I FEEL SHE IS NOT DESERVE FOR THIS. VERY SAD.

IF IT HAPPENS LIKE THIS, THEN THERE IS NO VALUE FOR THIS AWARD.

Its very surprising nobody knew .about Kailash satyarthi , untill his name made International Headlines . This shows how our media is ignorant about creating awareness about peaple who deserve the most . Child labour needs holistic approach , morover just enacting laws and implementing is not enough. Every recued child labour need to be rahabilitated , some times giving them equal pay as adults is not the bad idea. There r lot of peaple who gave their blood and sweat for betterment of child rights . But in Malala Yousfzai case , she just shot on her head which made celebrity outright , even her ground work about the cause is almost negligible . The UN interest and hidden agenda patronised her candidature , but in Malalas own terms education is critical , but ' education ' is not only about books but understanding traditional roles of a girl in a family which empowers society as whole .

Congrluations to both of them. God bless them for their special nobel work.

Shame on our govt. for not recognizing the efforts of child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi whereas he has received an award from International platform. All the bharat ratnas , etc are only meant to apease cricketors, film stars, singers dancers, those doing some good social work for country are ignore. child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi should also try to ban child begging.

In Child Labour, child begging should also be abolished. There should be a ban on CHILD BEGGING, WHICH IS CRUDEST FORM OF CHILD LABOUR, IN WHICH THE POLICEMEN ALSO GET HAFTAS, where infants and children are either given birth or kidnapped and misused (even maimed) by cruel and heartless people. stop giving money to babies and children. THEY ARE MADE TO BEG IN THE SCORCHING SUN, COLD AND RAINS and THE MONEY COLLECTED BY THEM IS USED BY THE SCOUNDRELS AND IF THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO COLLECT ENOUGH MONEY THEY ARE DONE AWAY WITH. Even, if these children survive somehow, the girls go in the flesh trade and boys become thieves or some anti social elements. Only give food, clothing and shelter. better still you may give the money to good NGOs, who will rehabilitate the innocent babies and children and finally THE SCOUNDRELS WILL STOP MISUSING INNOCENT CHILDREN FOR THEIR SELFISH GAINS. REMEMBER ALL CHILDREN ARE INNOCENT AND VULNERABLE AND CANNOT FIGHT THE CRUEL WORLD ON THEIR OWN. PLEASE STOP GIVING ALMS TO BABIES AND CHILDREN AND ALSO, TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES WHO IN TURN SHOULD SPREAD THE NEWS TO EVERY INDIAN RICH POOR EVERYONE. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY WE CAN SAVE OUR INNOCENT CHILDREN. NA RAHENGI BAS NA BAJEGI BASOORI.

    Mr. Dinesh
our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) ONLY our role model still end of the era. Do not mix this honor with community wise. any kind honor of awards always be given for their noble service in society not by religion wise. Be gentle and do not think on bold mentality, just congrats them beside the religious.
