Mangalore: Quadros Family now between Hell and Deep Sea

by Viju Mangalore - Daijiworld.com Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 16: Eighteen-year-old Michael is a student who has obtained first class marks in his II PU examination. He has now joined the degree course in B Com at Pompei College. Least does he know that his father, an alcoholic has burnt all his books when he found that Michael was suffering from brain tumour!

Unable to withstand this pressure, Michael’s father Daniel Cyprian Quadros became mentally disturbed and is at present being treated in the psychiatry ward of Fr Muller Hospital.

Misery haunts this family which was once a cosy, well-knit unit and contented with what they had. From pillar to post seeking  help they groped amidst helplessness, with hopes getting bleaker with each passing day.

On the one hand was Michael battling between life and death and on the other hand was mentally disturbed Daniel. The poor mother has to bear it all. Making her heart a heart of stone, Angelina lives with hope for a better tomorrow.

It was in August that bright and active Michael began vomiting and the parents had him admitted to Manipal hospital where he was diagnosed for cancer. It was like a thunderbolt that stuck the family as it was already reeling under debts and their economic condition was pathetic.

Struggled that they did, they spent Rs 60,000 for extracting the tumour from his brain at A J Hospital and Research Centre Kuntikan here.

On being recommended chemotherapy, he was sent to Manipal where he developed infection near his groin during the course of the therapy.

Flustered with another setback, Michael had to be operated on as the cyst that had formed aggravated the condition. The treatment has now reduced him to half of his earlier weight.

In order to meet the expenses, Angelina has kept her cattle in her relatives' place and has incurred a huge loan which she will in no way be able to repay if the present condition prevails.

Michael has finished 30 rounds of chemotherapy, but his infection near his groin needs sink grafting which costs a huge sum of money.

“Although we have been helped by the church with around Rs 10,000 and from many other generous persons and institutions, the expenses have shot up. Daniel’s treatment too has to be taken care of and Michael’s condition is what worries me,” said mother Angelina, who is not sure about her tomorrow’s meal.

After shifting hospitals, Michael has finally reached the free ward of A J Hospital. Dr Venkat Sanjiva is his doctor and for the family to return to a survival standard, it requires around Rs 2 lac which includes treatment for Michael and medical care to Daniel.

It is evident that if the family finds no help, it will perish and the end will be inhuman. It is a heart-rending scene to see young Michael fight a battle between life and death. The plight of the mother is unimaginable.

Each day is a struggle for the Quadroses as misery has struck them hard. Only a helping hand can turn their misery into relief and good health fwith the help of good medical attention.

Reach out to this ailing family and to young Michael by your financial help.
