'It is difficult to be a Sania Mirza in this country'

New Delhi, Nov 25 (PTI): She might be one of the most sought-after sportspersons in India but tennis ace Sania Mirza says "it's difficult to be a Sania Mirza in this country" due to the prevailing "gender inequality" and called for an urgent need to bring about a cultural change.

"Yes, it is difficult to be a Sania Mirza in this country," the tennis star said while explaining the difficulties she faced during her career as a sportswoman.

She added, "I think a lot of controversies that I had faced in my career was because I am woman. Had I been a man, I could have avoided some of the controversies."

Sania today became the United Nations Women's goodwill ambassador for the South Asian region, joining the campaign to end violence against women and girls and also raise awareness on gender equality.

"I think for more women to come into sports (in India), the culture needs to be changed. Government is getting involved and I guess that is going to change a lot of things. Our current Sports Minister, Mr Sarbananda Sonowal supports women sports a lot and I have personally seen it," she said.

"I am happy that the government is also opening up and speaking about the gender inequality that is present in our society. And the fact that they are trying to do something about it, speaks volume about it.

"We need a cultural change and I hope media takes the responsibility, too. Media has the biggest voice, they can and should make a difference," Sania added.

Sania said she today vowed to take up the most important battle "I might face off the field".

"Gender equality is something we all advocate. Some speak about it, some don't. I have chosen to speak about it. I hope one day everyone will say that we are equal and women are not treated as objects. I will try and do everything I can to bring about a change," said Sania after becoming the first South Asian woman to be appointed the goodwill ambassador in UN Women's history.

Stating that the mentality of not just men but women also needed to undergo a major transformation for a country to achieve gender equality, Sania said, "Women's safety is something that has been going on. Nirbhaya case had opened our eyes. Not that it was the first case that had happened, but a lot of people woke up to 'what's going on'.

"Women face discrimination. They are treated like animals and it is not right. The thinking needs to be changed. Mentality needs to be changed. Men must understand that women also go out to do their work just as they do. But even women have to realise their own worth," India's most successful women's tennis player said.

Meanwhile, Sania said she was looking forward to playing in the upcoming Indian Premier Tennis League (ITPL), starting on December 6.

"I am actually leaving tonight...in a few hours. I heading to practice from here and then to the airport. I am very excited about it. I am looking forward to playing in the ITPL," she concluded.

Why the religion here, dear brother first compare the rights given by Islam to women comparing to other religion, I am proud to say that Islam has given far better rights to our sisters, daughters and mothers than any other religion on earth, if you are pointing at the equal rights there are so many muslim womens who are championed in sports with the the limits prescribed by my religion. if you are pointing towards wearing a short skirt and tight dress sure I am in concurrence with you and my religion never encourage such dress to our daughters, sister and mothers.

Prophts first wife(khadija) long before his propht hood started of the Abrahamic faiths was an independent business woman of much wealth. He was an employee. Pre-Islamic Arabia allowed for women to own their own businesses not need a man to go anywhere, and marry whom they wanted. There were also matrilineal Arab societies where women ruled. There were women poets, women tribal leaders too!!

Although gender inequality in India is true, Sania Mirza must be extremely careful about her public utterances. Being a publicly known figure in India and in Pakistan and at the same time being the wife of a Pakistani national any negative comments she makes about India will only be mis-used by India's enemy Pakistan to target India.
Does Sania have the guts and the b@!#$ (not those) to make a similar criticism against Pakistan ? Im sure she does not as she understands well what the consequences will be for her.

Marriage to another national does not automatically change your nationality to the nationality of your spouse. You need to apply officially for citizenship/nationality change.
Sonia Gandhi became Indian only after officially applying for Indian citizenship. Till then she held on to her original nationality even though married to Rajiv. I dont know whether Sania Mirza has applied for Pak citizenship but I think not.

It is true that there are many incidents of abuse, torture of women in India but those women are mostly the among the common people of India. I am surprised to here from a celebrity star like Sania that she has been the victim of gender inequality. Being born in a community which prefers to cover women, she has reached such a peak in her life means is it not because this country wholeheartedly supported her ? Is not because people of India cheered for her in her every single achievement? I am not undermining her own hard work, hard ships. Those hard moments are there for every budding achievers may it be in sports or anything else. It is disgusting to see her saying this after having become a ambassador of the tennis sports in India. What message she is giving to the world? What image of India she is creating ? Very sad. Talking about controversies, for almost all celebrities the controversies are self made due to their actions and talk just like with this statement she created. While I agree that Indians at large should learn to respect women, I disagree with her statement degrading India.

Sania Mirza may be right - she is speaking for what she has experienced. Her marrying a neighbour - sour grapes?
But all readers here, comment as though she is totally off the mark.

In this same website, almost everyday - child raped, girl killed, woman molested, pushed off the train, into the well, stalked at the park, raped in moving car, raped and killed by watchman, honor killed, fidelity suspected.

I suppose various forms of gender equality? Do not say - they are one-off incidents. One-off incidents is data, imagine if it is daily affair at every home!

The problem with us is, we refuse the reality. Have our parents, more so fathers, brothers spoke about this at home and created a gender equal discussion, our men would have been more gender equal - even in daiji forum.

All those gender equal thinking men, salute you, I am not generalizing.

Second, in all likelihood, she and her husband after retirement, might settle in a third country, if not in Pakistan. But it will not be in India as it will huge embarassment for pakistan govt, if their national sportsman had to settle in india. So she need not worry about other sanias in india. A woman is human, she is as good, as wise, as creative and as responsible as man. She is equal to man. All should know that woman is a creation of God's purpose and is not an object of convenience. She is part of us being mother, sister, wife and daughter. Let us respect her.
But, Sania, while accepting your laments, please note that in India women are treated more respectfully than a many countries in the world. Some crazy people are there in this world in every country.

"Yes, it is difficult to be a Sania Mirza in this country,,,,

There are aroung 55 crore female population in this country.
NO one complained like you including muslim women
You could not even find a Indian single boy to get married and preferred tie knots to a man from our enemy country,
Now you are free to settle in a Taliban land instead of blaming Indian culture.

Apart from gender inequality she also being targeted for being minority married to a Pakistani cricketer. It might take another 5 generations for men in India to improve.
