5,000 buffaloes slaughtered in Nepal's animal sacrifice ritual

Kathmandu, Nov 29 (PTI): Over 5,000 buffaloes have been slaughtered in a mass animal sacrifice festival in Nepal, believed to be the world's largest such ritual, despite efforts by animal rights activists to end the "barbaric" practice.

Tens of thousands of devotees, including from India, flocked to the festival, which is held every five years at the Gadhimai temple at Bariyarpur village in Bara district of southern Nepal.

Worshippers believe the animal sacrifice, meant to appease Hindu goddess Gadhimai, brings them luck and prosperity.

5,000 buffaloes were slaughtered by some 400 slaughterers on Friday, the first day of animal sacrifice, according to police.

Thousands of goats, pigs and chickens will also be sacrificed before the festival ends today.

Organisers and the authorities defend the festival as a generations-old tradition, though animal rights activists decry it as barbaric.

However, in a sign that the campaign to end the practice may have had some impact, the number of buffaloes killed dropped to about 5,000, half the number slaughtered when the festival was last held five years ago.

India's Supreme Court had recently ordered the government to stop the export of cattle to Nepal during the Gadhimai festival.

The organising committee of the festival has banned journalists and photographers from taking pictures of slaughtering.

Meanwhile, a one-year-old child and an elderly woman from Bihar in India died during the festival yesterday.

The child died of cold while the 65-year-old woman died after she was trapped in a huge crowd.

These are the few sayings of Hindu sages.
Hinduism’s greatest propagator Swami Vivekanand said thus:
“You will be surprised to know that according to ancient Hindu rites and rituals, a man cannot be a good Hindu who does not eat beef”.
(The Complete Works of Swami Vivekanand, vol.3, p. 536).

Adi Shankaracharya’ commentary on Brihdaranyakopanishad 6/4/18 says

‘Odan’ (rice) mixed with meat is called ‘Mansodan’. On being asked whose meat it should be, he answers ‘Uksha’. ‘Uksha’ is used for an ox, which is capable to produce semen.

You go to "Hinduism and animal sacrifices" and you will see for yourself what it is like.
Then may be you can be aware of the facts.
But in India old concept has changed and follow principles of Ahimasa\non-violence.
But in other countries Hindus still continue sacrificing cattle (cows etc) on special occasions and eat the meat too on those days.
Read The Reality of Animal Sacrifice by Rajiv Malik, Bali. He explains many things on this.

Show come conern what I have written, I don’ think you got it. Although we practice animal sacrifice especially toward our Daivas (Bhootha-Kola) & at some places towards Kali in rest of the country, this practice is a blind belief by people and not suggested by our holy books or scriptures. I said we have to come out of such practices. I don’t have to read someone’s book on such issue to think practically and logically. Just because “Bhaktha Siriyala” who is known for his generous and serving the needy especially the Munis, and once when God wanted to test him in the Avtar of one such Hungry Saadhu order Siriyala to kill and cook his own son when he had nothing else to offer in his poor house and Siriyala did it , finally to be blessed by the god for his ultimate sacrifice and make his son alive. All these looks good to watch in TV in which Late Lokesh played a superb acting, but the end of the day god did not advice his Bhakths to sacrifice their son if they dint have anything to offer or offer kill a chicken or lamb or cow instead for no mistake of theirs. It is only for our blind beliefs based on some incidents in the past plus fettish we have developed all such things.
This is your quotation for which we are placing another order but with some more quantity.
