London, Jan 30 (IANS): Chelsea striker Diego Costa was Friday suspended for three matches for stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can Tuesday in the second leg of Capital One semi-final at Stamford Bridge, which the Blues clinched 2-1 on aggregate.

The Football Association (FA) has pressed the charges against the Spaniard related to an incident that happened 12 minutes into the game, reports bbc.com.

"Diego Costa will serve a three-match suspension with immediate effect after a charge of violent conduct against him was found proven by an independent regulatory commission Jan 30," FA said in a statement.

"The Chelsea forward had denied the charge in relation to an on-field incident involving Liverpool's Emre Can which occurred in the 12th minute of the League Cup semi-final second leg at Stamford Bridge Jan 27."

The 26-year-old will miss Saturday's English Premier League home game against Manchester City as well as games against Aston Villa and Everton.

The incident, which took place near the dugouts was missed by the match officials but was later reviewed on video by the referee.

The Blues cannot appeal the decision taken by the FA independent commission hearing.
