Karkala, May 24: Close on the heels of deputy commissioner's stringent steps to evict illegal settlements, encroached footpaths in Udupi, town council here too has now taken strong measures to smoothen traffic in the town limits.  Measures have already been taken to evict all illegal shops along the footpath.

A decision in this regard was taken in a meeting held here under the presidentship of Kundapur sub-division assistant commissioner Prabhakar Sharma.

Small-time businessmen and street side vendors have encroached footpath along Car Street, Mangalore and market roads.  This has been causing various problems to people. So too it has often been noticed that vehicular movement in these areas too has been affected owing to this problem.

On the other hand various measures have been planned for smooth flow of traffic within the town limits.  Following are some of the steps taken by the town council:

  • Buses coming from Udupi and Hebri are directed not to give a stop in front of Prakash Jewellers but to move directly to the bus stand.
  • Buses coming from Mangalore are not supposed to give any stop after the petrol pump and should move to bus stand straightaway.
  • None of the buses should be staying for more than 10 minutes in the bus stand.
  • Buses going to Mangalore should give stop only at Anantashayana, Danashale and Anekere and nowhere else.
All the vehicles plying within the town council limits should not cross speed limit of 20 km/h.
  • Parking of rickshaws at Moorumarga has been prohibited.  Along with that none of the vehicles should be parked along the road after 8 in the morning.
