Mangalore, May 25: Players from Derek Chess School here won laurels at National-level 'Sangli Chess Festival 2007' organized by Nuthan Buddi Mandal, Sangli recently.

Nine-year-old Shabdik Varma of SDM English Primary School, Ujire scored 7 points in 8 rounds in ' the late Leelabai R Deshpande Chess Tournament ' for Under-10 category. 

Eight-year-old Anantharam R U of Sharada Vidyalaya scored 6.5 points in the same category and was placed 3rd. Shabdik Varma's  feat is the best performance by a DK Junior player in the national-level open event in the current year. 

 

Anantharam R U bagged another prize in the fest by scoring 6.5 points in 8 rounds in the late Tammannacharya Padsalgikar Chess Tournament’ for Under-8 Category. He was placed 3rd.

Twelve-year-old Vanessa D'Souza of St Agnes English School, Mangalore also bagged two prizes in the festival. She scored 6.5 points in ‘the late DR TD Hathiram Chess Tournament for Under-14 category. She won the 3rd place. She continued her good run as she scored 6 points in 8 rounds in ‘the late Abasaheb Ganu Chess Tournament for Under-12 category and was placed 4th.


Sangli Chess festival is a national-level chess event which attracts strong players from across the nation. Nuthan Buddi Mandal is organizing this festival since 1979.
