Puttur, Aug 6: A person working for a coconut plantation in the taluk was washed away in a canal passing through the plantation located in the vicinity of Neerakatte Power Project near Uppinangady in the taluk. The tragedy occurred on Tuesday August 4, when he was crossing the canal in the process of gathering fallen coconuts.

Umesh (35), son of the late Sheshappa Gowda, resident of Nagari House in Alangaru died in this incident. He was working for Seetaram Gowda, supervisor of the above plantation, which is located at Beebi Majalu within Golitottu gram panchayat limits. Umesh had gone missing after visiting the plantation for gathering the coconuts on Tuesday.

After the concerned began searching for Umesh, his footwear and gunny bag were found by the side of the canal. After growing suspicious about the possibility of the worker having slipped and fallen into canal, a detailed search was undertaken, and the body of missing workers was found late night on Tuesday from the canal.

A complaint was thereafter filed in Uppinangady police station. Tahsildar of the taluk, Kulle Gowda, said that compensation from the government will be decided on the basis of postmortem report and first information report filed in police station. He felt that the worker's family will be eligible to receive compensation if he had accidentally been dragged away by the force of water.
