Swachh Bharat: Ranked 11, Mangaluru tops list of 'other major cities' in India

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Aug 9: The city of Mangaluru has topped the list of 'other major cities' of the country in Swachh Bharat Mission's rankings released on Saturday August 8.

Mangaluru is ranked 11 overall in the list of 476 cities in the country that were surveyed.

As reported earlier, Mysuru ranks number one in the country, and Bengaluru at number 7 topping the list of capital cities in the country. These apart, two other places from Karnataka - Hassan and Mandya - also made it to the top 10.

The survey, conducted during 2014-15, was commissioned by the ministry of urban development as required under the National Sanitation Policy of 2008. These rankings are based on the extent of open defecation and solid waste management practices, according to a government release.

Mangaluru's achievement has a lot to do with concerted efforts and cleanliness initiatives taken up by not only the administration but also by religious bodies, several different groups and even educational institutions, and particularly, the Ramakrishna Mission. Also, initiatives for solid waste management like door-to-door collection of garbage and segregation, awareness campaigns and so on have borne fruit. Though cleanliness initiatives in Mangaluru began many years ago, and the zilla panchayat even won the national Nirmal Gram award for total sanitation in 2011, the Swachh Bharat Mission added a fillip to these efforts. As back as 2008, Mangaluru was among the 8th cleanest city in the country.

Speaking to daijiworld, mayor Jacintha Alfred said, "We are very happy and feel proud that Mangaluru has achieved the 11th position in Swachh Bharat Mission. We aim to take Mangaluru to number 1 position and we will work towards this goal."

However, MLA J R Lobo said he was disappointed and that Mangaluru deserved a better rank. "I am disappointed. Our city is cleaner than Bengaluru and other cities in the top 10. Mangaluru should have been at least at the 5th position. I think there has been a lapse in the report given by our corporation. The corporation must improve on the report," he said.

It is the people who make up a city. We the Kudlaites have always been civic minded and kept our surroundings clean. It is outside population who import their dirty habits.

All shop keepers should keep front footpath clean by appointing/hiring a cleaner or cleaning the area themselves. In the morning they should mop the tiled foot path or clean with water. Some countries in west they follow these rules. Also Shop keepers can complain about the person for littering and he should be fined. This way we can be Number one in Swachh Bharat.

Mangalore can easily reach No 1 spot provided we all cooperate with the corporation. I have seen many Indian cities, Mangalore is in fact better than Mysore in many respects. You ask people who have seen both the cities. Something must have gone wrong in assessment.

While this news is encouraging, we have to remember that there is lot more to do if we have to reach anywhere near western countries or even middle east countries. There is need for organized traffic flow, pedestrian space, discipline among shop keepers in misusing public place outside the shops for display, adequate parking space, etc. If one sits back rejoicing on this news, next time Mangalore will not even be 111 in rank. Present ranking is 11 because others are worse and not because we are really good at "swatch bharath" activity.

A lot of people think that Western countries are clean because the municipality has sophisticated equipment to clean the roods, lots of dustbins on the footpaths, etc. That is not really true. They are clean because people don't throw garbage around in the first place. We all know that as a one-time exercise we all need to join hands and clean the existing mess, but our cities will remain clean in future only if our habits change.

A wise man once said: India is unclean because Indians are clean. What he meant was we like to keep ourselves so clean that we discard any dirty item outside our "own area". We sweep our compound and at the very end just push it onto the street. We eat a banana and can't hold onto the peel for even a few minutes until we get to a bin. Unless we, as Indians, expand our definition of what is "ours" when we keep ourselves clean, we will keep littering and blame our governments for our lack of clean cities.

Hats Off to West Bengal, Karnataka, and Kerala.

Voters in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar needs to wake up to the reality.

    Most interesting part is

    Modi's constituency - 418 Rank
    Susma's Constituency - 312 Rank
    Sonia's Constituency - 240 Rank

Shameless politicians irrespective of party affiliations.
With so much MPLAD Fund, they could not bring a change in their own constituencies. what change can we expect them to bring to the nation.

Navi Mumbai is my home since 22 years. This is a CIDCO planned township, with a clear vision of clean, green and livable city. NMMC has imbibed CIDCO culture and so far lived up to residents' expectations. NMMC is controlled by NCP. BJP has hardly any presence, now 6 corporators (previous 1) out of 111. Its partner Shiv Sena has 37 (previous 16). Should the municipal control slip out of NCP and its local ally Congress into SS-BJP hands, residents expect the cleanliness performance will be similar, because certain administrative standards are set and enforced. The residents pay high property taxes and expect the civic body to deliver.
