Udupi: Lady from Assam defrauded with promise of MBBS seat

Udupi, Aug 18: After the mother of a girl aspiring to gain entry into MBBS course run by Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences filed a case at Manipal police station alleging to have been relieved of Rs 8,44,500 with the promise of a seat by self-claimed agents, Sikkim Manipal University has warned the aspirants and their parents to keep a distance from these agents. The university said it has come to its notice that people trying to get admission into Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences at Gangtok are being duped by some persons with the promise of getting them admissions into the university.

As per the complaint filed by Kalyani Kalita, mother of MBBS seat aspirant, Chayasmita from Assam, Dr Ranjan Kumar Singh and Mrinali Singh residing near Syndicate Circle at Manipal cheated her after promising to get a seat for her daughter to the MBBS course run by Sikkim Manipal University. She said she paid Rs 2,80,000 to the couple on August 11, 2014 and again Rs 5,64,500 on September 8 the same year. She alleged that the couple neither got a seat for her daughter, nor returned the money.

The university said in its clarification that forged admission forms and other documents had been provided to the candidate by some persons using stationery they had got prepared on their own in the name of the university, which had forged signatures. It is also said that admissions are made through merit-based tests and not through outsiders, adding that all details are made available in the university's website.
