Kundapur, Jun.15: A fortnight-long training camp and workshop on scientific prawns culture was inaugurated under the auspices of Udupi Prawns Culture and Development Institute and centrally-aided project, for the year 2006-07, recently.
Krishnaprasad Adyanthaya, managing trustee of Kollur Mookambika temple, said that, its essential to breed prawns on the basis of scientific management, in order to maintain the market price locally for the prawns and make the yield economically-profitable.
He further said that, the need of the hour would be, to organize collective efforts in maintaining local market within control and thereby sustain further growth of this popular enterprise.
M M Suvarna, president of Bagwadi Hobli(Regional) branch of Mogaveera Mahajan Seva Sangha was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr P Keshavanath, dean of Mangalore Fisheries College, while presiding over the function said that scientific changes in prawns culture should be applied in all seasons.
Krishnaraj Puranik, chief managing officer of Udupi Prawns Culture and Development Institute, welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory remarks.
Varadaraj, assistant professor of the college, spoke on the selection of ponds for undertaking prawns culture, their design and construction.
