Mangalore, Jun 17: The Mangalore city corporation (MCC), at its last meeting here on Saturday June 16, is understood to have given clearance to as many as 590 files .
Files were given a nod on condition that the MCC commissioner could approve the same depending on the urgency of work. When it was announced that the 590 files were given approval, Mariamma Thomas (BJP) sought the details and wanted to know how a standing committee on town planning cleared those 590 files.
Former Mayors K Ashraf and Shashidhar hegde said if the BJP wished to oppose they would have opposed the clearing of the files at the committee meeting itself. He also said that it was just two Congress members but three who were present at the meeting on Wednesday.
Another BJP leader Shankar Bhat sought to know how it was possible to clear 590 files in a single day, while it was difficult to go through a file even in a full day. He also opposed the moving of the files under the section 108. The work that is approved by the standing committee is said to be worth Rs 2.07 crore. It is for the first time in the history of MCC that such a huge number of files were cleared.
In reply to all the questions Mayor Vijaya Arun said though the files have been cleared by the town planning standing committee and subsequently by the MCC the decision on the approval of the files was left to discretion of the MCC commissioner. It is left to him to undetake the developmental work depending on the urgency of the work.
