Body of Assam student leader's brother found

Guwahati, Aug 29 (IANS): The body of the brother of a student leader was found in Assam's Goalpara district on Saturday, police said.

Tension gripped Matia in Goalpara following the recovery of the body of Mrinank Nath, brother of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) president Dipank Nath, from Nandeswar area in the district.

Sources close to the family said Mrinank, an accountant with the state irrigation department, was missing since Friday night.

"He had gone to office on Friday and did not return since then," said a relative.

Family sources alleged that he might have been murdered.

Police in Goalpara, however, suspect it to be an accident.

They said Mrinank might have been hit by some vehicle when he was over a bridge on the Dumuni river at Nandeswar, and fell into the water.

"Local people today (Saturday) morning saw a motorcycle and identified it to be of Mrinank. Later, they saw the body on the bank of the river at a little distance," a police official said.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and a case has been registered.
