Sullia: Stealing of bullocks, illegal cattle trafficking - two held

Sullia, Sep 1: Subrahmanya police, who got to know that two bullocks were being taken illegally to a slaughterhouse at Kasargod, intercepted a jeep at Patoly in Balpa village near Subrahmanya on Monday August 31. Two bullocks which were bound in violent way that caused sufferings to the animals, were found inside the jeep.

While two of the accused were arrested, the other two managed to flee. The arrested men have been identified as Hameed alias Kasayi Hameed from Punacha, and Sudhakar from Balpa village. Those who fled are Naveen from Balpa and Hukra from Punacha. The animals stuffed inside the jeep were stolen from Subrahmanya area, it is learnt.

It is said that Hameed alias Kasayi Hameed from Punacha is a professional cattle thief, who has been accused of stealing cattle left for grazing in Subrahmanya area and transporting them to slaughterhouse at Kasargod often. A few days back, the people, who came to know that he had stolen a bullock, were waiting to catch him at Moodbailu village. Hameed, who was tipped off about the imminent danger, released the bullock he had stolen on the way and took to his heels, and thus escaped from getting mauled by the crowd, it is gathered.

A case in this connection was registered in Subrahmanya police station. On being produced in the court here, both the arrested persons were remanded to judicial custody. The police personnel are trying to locate those who escaped during the operation. Subrahmanya station house officer, Nagesh Kadri, has been leading the investigation.
