Udupi / Manipal, Jul 11: Urology is defined as the speciality which offers diagnosis and treatment of disorders in kidneys, urethras, bladder and male reproductive organs. ( Andrology comes from the Greek word andros, which means man). Andrology is the medical specialty that deals with men's health, particularly relating to the problems of the male reproductive system and urological problems that are unique to men.
It is said that infertility problems affect as much as 10% of male population, and above the age of 40 it affects nearly 40% of the male population .In more than 90% of cases, male reproductive disorders can be diagnosed and treated successfully, sometimes with medication and at other times with external devices or with surgery.
Male affected with a genital problem still does not know whom to approach, (whereas most women have their own personal gynaecologists). According to Dr Padmaraj Hegde, professor, department of Urology, some common andrological disorders are impotence, erectile dysfunction, infertility, peyronic's disease, penile curvature, epidymis, vas. andrological cancers, swelling of scrotum, groin swelling including hernias. In childless couples it is a male factor (the husband) that is responsible for 50% infertility.
Male-specific medical and surgical procedures include Vasectomy as well as interventions to deal with male genitor-urinary disorders. Treatment plans, methods and schedules vary for different age groups. A treatment plan is developed to fit each patients needs. A special screening package is made available for just Rs 499.
Modern Andrology has revolutionized the treatment of male reproductive disorders. An entirely new set of investigative modalities has made diagnosis not only much simpler but more accurate and comprehensive. Microsurgery can use magnifications of upto 40 times to visualize structures invisible to the naked eye and to operate on them with great precision, Bypass operations are being performed under the microscope for impotence and infertility providing hopes to patients diagnosed with this problems.
