Mangalore July 12: Bluetooth is currently gaining popularity all over owing to its wide ranging applications, stated B Raghuveer Baliga, retired chief general manager of BSNL here, on Tuesday, July 10.

In a very short span of time Bluetooth gained acceptance since its invention in 1994 yet not many people are aware what the technology exactly stands for. Bluetooth wireless technology is nothing but a short- range communications technology intended to replace the cables connecting portable and fixed devices Baliga stated. He was making a presentation on Bluetooth at the meeting jointly organized by the Institution of Engineers’ Association (Udupi) and Institution of Valuers, along with the Kodagu Dakshina Kannada.

Highlighting its uses he informed that what makes Bluetooth more popular is the low power consumption, its small size and less cost of purchase. According to him the said technology has achieved worldwide acceptance as one Bluetooth-enabled device can connect to other Bluetooth-enabled devices in proximity anywhere in the globe.

Describing the technology further he stated that in order to minimize interference as several devices are working on the same frequency, it uses adaptive frequency hopping (AFD) capability to take advantage of the available frequently. He added that the signal hops among 79 frequencies at one MHz intervals so as to give a high degree interference immunity.

He proudly declared that two years back in 2005, 35 million Bluetooth units were shipped globally. The Chairman of Engineers Association Satish Rao Iddya and others were also present during the talk.
