Kundapur, Jul 13: “The 1857 war of Independence was not given the due importance by our historians,” said Dr Surendra Rao, the head of the department of history of Mangalore University while presenting a paper on the 1857 Freedom Battale at Bhandarkar’s college under the auspices of Humanities Association, here recently.
He further said that the 1857 war of independence has had its own unique place in the history of our nation.
British who were the then rulers of our country had completely put down the revolt, he said. Yet the spontaneous war had succeeded in shaking the foundation of British hegemony in India, he added.
The later freedom movement organized by the National Congress and Gandhi’s strategy of non-violence and Satyagraha were so unduly highlighted as to make up for the earlier spontaneous uprising of 1857 in later movement.
Dr Shanthram, the administrator of Manipal University presided over the function. S Narayan Rao the principal welcomed the gathering while Prof Uday Kumar, the head of the history department made an introductory speech. Sneha proposed the vote of thanks and Rekha Shetty compered the programme.
