Mangalore: Ullal MLA U T Khader has requested the chief minister of Karnataka to sanction a pre university and a first grade college for Ullal constituency.

He met the chief minister on Thursday July 12. He urged the government to grant a college to Ullal as Ullal constituency is in dire need of a college.

Khader said that chief minister has agreed to the request. He further said that he has assured that the colleges would be approved after the discussions with the authorities concerned.

Mangalore: Free Eye Camp on July 15

Mangalore:  A free eye camp under the joint auspices of Catholic Sabha of Bejai Unit and Bejai youth council will be organized in the collaboration of Yenepoya Medical College in Bejai Church hall here on Sunday July 15, said Joseph Nazareth, president of Catholic Sabha, addressing a press conference here on Friday July 13.

The camp will be inaugurated at 9 in the morning. Fr J P Tauro parish priest of Bejai church will be the chair person, he said. The inauguration would be followed by registrations, he added.

Six experts from Yenepoya Medical College will do medical check up. Spectacles will be distributed at subsidized rate to those in need of them. They will be referred for the surgery by the eye specialists to Yenepoya Medical College if necessary, a press note stated.

Surgery will be carried out at subsidized fees, he said. The camp is held for the benefit of the community irrespective of religions, he added.

Fr Santosh Menezes assistant priest of Bejai church, Anup Moras president of Bejai Youth Council, Lawrence Pinto and Angel Rodrigues team members were president at the press conference. 

Central Excise to Hold Seminar

Mangalore: Commissioner of Central Exercise, Mangalore will hold a seminar / open house meeting in respect of levy of service tax on the five new services introduced at Trade centre, Balmatta, here on Monday July 30 at 4.30 PM, a press note stated.

The five new five services as introduced on June 1 are renting, works contract service, development and supply of content service, designing service and mining service.

The release stated whoever desires be it service providers or general public to get information about the new services are invited to attend the seminar.

Konkani Text Books to be launched on July 14

Mangalore: Karnataka State Government has given its approval in the cabinet to teach Konkani as a third optional language either in Kannada or Devanagari script, said Dr K Mohan Pai honorable secretary of Karnataka State Konkani Linguistic Minority Educational Institutions’ Association, Mangalore.
 
He was speaking at press conference here on Friday July 13.

The new Konkani text books will be launched in this regard and the demonstration of the method of teaching Konkani will be held at the auditorium of Nalanda English Medium School on Saturday July 14 at 11 in the morning, according to a press release.

B Nagaraja Shetty MLA of Bantwal, N Yogish Bhat MLA of Mangalore, Fr Eric Crasta president Konkani Language Board, M Annappa Pai honorary secretary of Canara Educational Institution, Mangalore and Raghava R Kamath, president of Konkani Cultural Organization will be the chief guests.

The demonstration will be done by M Annappa Pai.

Dr U S Mohandas Nayak, president, Dr K Mohan Pai ,honorary secretary and Indira Jodumatta treasurer were preset at the press conference.

Protest held by PUCL against encounter

Mangalore: “We are not supporting the violence route opted by Naxals. Instead we are opposing the killing of innocent victims in the name of Naxals” This was the message echoed during the protest held at the leadership of PUCL in town, on Friday Jul 13 evening. 

The police atrocities that took place in the guise of encounter at Menasinahadya should be subjected to judicial investigation.  Besides, a CBI enquiry should be made in this incidence, urged PUCL leader Pattabhirama Somayaji.

Government and police department seem to have an agenda to kill the innocent in the land, where the propagator of violence Gandhiji was born while the attempts are under way, to curb the freedom besides snatch the individual liberty of those who raise their voices against the state administration.  The statement of home minister M P Prakash at the legislative assembly that “there were two encounters and three killings” seem to have shed new light on the whole incident, he said.

The judicial enquiry should be held on the killing of innocent victims in the guise of encounters, said writer, Sabiha Bhoomi Gowda.

The police atrocities on innocent victims should be abandoned. Besides the act of snatching the right of freedom unjustified, said Corporation Bank Employees Union T R Bhat.

At the background of violence path followed by the naxals, government has failed to introspect on its policies instead resorted to kill them.  Government should have considered their right too.  It should have known that everyone has the right in the democratic governance, said Communal Harmony Forum district convenor Ummer U S.

Karnataka Forum for Dignity Abdul Khader, Mohammed Kallanje, PUCL's Suresh Bhat, Bertram Pinto, Dalit Development Organization Anna, district Valored functionary Renny D’Souza, thinker Bhoomi Gowda, Ahinda's Lolaksha, Vittal Bhandary Harekala, Roshni Nilaya's Rita Noronha and others were present at the protest.

Despite rains, the protest went uninterrupted in front of the office of deputy commissioner, in the city.
