Mangaluru: NMP becomes first port in India to launch Ro-Ro service via sea

Media Release

Mangaluru, Oct 21: New Mangalore Port (NMP) has become the first port to introduce Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) service in India via sea. The service was launched at New Mangalore Port on Tuesday October 20.

Pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) M V Maria India, a 160-metre long Ro-Ro ship with a capacity to carry up to 150 loaded trucks and 210 cars called at the port and started its operation. This vessel will be operating between Mangaluru and Hazira (in Surat). With a high operating speed of 16 Knots, the ship can cover Mangaluru-Hazira distance in less than 36 hours. The entire round trip voyage including time at the ports will be of five days. The service is taken up by Link Shipping & Management System Pvt Ltd, and M/s Alvares and Thomas are steamer agents and stevedores.

Loaded trucks to Surat were driven into the vessel and the vessel sailed out. The drivers of the trucks also started in a special bus to Hazira and they will drive out their respective vehicles.

The unique feature of this vessel is that the loaded trucks and cars can be driven into the vessel and can be driven out once it reaches its final destination. This coastal service between Mangaluru and Hazira which covers a road distance of over 1,200 km will contribute substantial savings to truck operators by way of reduced fuel consumption, wear and tear of vehicles, toll charges, delays in border crossing, risk of long distance driving, in addition to the advantage of de-congestion in road movement.

This service is part of the union government's policy of implementing the vision for Coastal Shipping, Tourism and Regional Development. Now the customers can make use of this cost-effective, reliable and environment-friendly mode of transport.

The New Mangalore Port is making all out efforts to attract more coastal movement and in this direction exclusive berths, storage sheds and gate is earmarked for coastal shipping.

Good thinking and action. Highly appreciated. I guess 36hours may be too late, should look in reducing time. Also more no. of ships may be necessary to introduce or else truck will be halt at port and waiting for ship. This may cause further delay....

Very good service. More ships may be necessary to provide good service and less traffic on roads. this will definitely reduce pollution. As any people have suggested drivers/cleaners and car owners shall be accommodated in the same ship.

The traffic between Mangalore and Mumbai is heavy as compared to Surat in Gujerat. Mumbai also has a well developed port - Ballard Pier as well as New Bombai (JNPT) For a viable solution it is desirable to include the service to Mumbai also. During holiday season, a large number of people bring their cars from Mumbai to South Kanara and Udupi Districts and the ro ro service would be ideal.

Good idea, though just thinking do we get 150 trucks on daily basis to Surat? I am sure, we won't get 200 Cars.

Now, may be trip is once in a week or alternative weeks, which makes trucks to wait for such a long time.. will it be worth?

    Regards,
    Oliver

why the separate bus for the drivers. doesnt make sense. bunkers must be alloted in the ship itself for the drivers/cleaners.

Indeed a good initiative for an cost effective transport. First of its kind. These kind of service are already available in Europe, Far & South east asia and also in the US, where they call as ferry passing. This shall substanially help in saving fuel, road congestion and also accidents. Mlore being a coastal port, the vessel should be given a SOS clearance and dedicated staff to avoid any delays for the early turn-around of the vessel. Since ships count by hours, every hour is important and it would be loosing money if stayed in the port.
