Mangaluru, Oct 27: A pregnant woman and her unborn baby died in a hospital in Vittal on the night of Monday October 26, following which, her family members alleged that the hospital and doctor's negligence had caused the sudden death.

Girija (26), wife of Ramesh (30) was admitted to the government hospital in Vittal on Monday morning for delivery of her second child. As she did not deliver even by night, the nurses asked her to walk around to stimulate labour, it is said.

She was then taken to labour ward for delivery just before 9 pm, and 15 minutes later, she was declared dead. The unborn baby also died.

Following her death, family members and locals gathered at Vittal hospital premises on Monday night and protested. Dr Vedavati, who treated Girija, refused to come out despite their demands, sources said. The family then filed a complaint in Vittal police station, based on which a case has been registered.

Family sources said that the cause of Girija's sudden death was not specified by her doctor or the hospital. They said that Girija was healthy and even when she was in delivery the doctors and nurses did not mention any problem with her health. They also alleged that negligence of the doctor had resulted in Girija's death.

Her body was brought to Wenlock hospital in the city on Tuesday October 27 for post-mortem.

Vera sad.I dont know why you all men there out side always blaming the govt.or hospitals immediately when a death occurs of a pregnant woman or during delivery. Here in this case noone has given a reason how and why the Lady expired.without knowing it dont just conclude your own decision.Sure it was bit suspicious when Lady goes inside and 15minutes later she was d dead.I can suspect, she must have either given a labour inducing injection which labour started ,so strong pains and it might have burst .It does happen.the Lady must have fell in shock and it caused death.I can only doubt this is the cause.I was astauned to hear the nurses made her walk to stimulate delivery.Very new!when pains are not there Walking also not help ,stimulate.other method must be done.Ask whether someone examined her to hear Babys heartbeat?was Baby alive when she came to Hospital?did anyone hear it is first question. It Needs lot of clarification.Heartfelt sympathy to her Family.Doctors must give a answer to the Family.many deaths happened in the last time.May her Soul rest in peace. Two lives are lost and Familys peace too.

At the time of happiness in a family expecting a birth of a child, the family usually believes that the mother wil be taken to a hospital for delivery and in a matter of few days all return happily home with a child. Its unexpected events such as these that brings utter and shock and disbelief to the family.
Having closely worked with obstetrics doctors, i hav seen even the most experienced doctors literally sweat in bringing out results. Patient condition which seem normal, can turn around unfavorably in a matter of minutes.
The public needs to understand this. No point taking out frustration on the doctor unless its a case of gross negligence.
I pity doctors who hav to face the wrath of insensible public. A doctor especially an obg doctor works the hardest. U have no idea how many sleepless nights they have. They lose out their entire youth hopelessly battling everyday with their duties and entrance tests. Absolutely penniless till the age of at least 35 until they just begun to establish, public blames them if they charge their fees (which again is much much cheaper than foreign countries). For the indian public paying for healthcare seems a burden but not a problem spending lavishly on ur cars and marriages. Its a sad state. We must stop taking doctors for granted. Respect a doctors effort.

At the outset,a big thank you 😊 for your understanding of labour room emergencies & limitations.sudden collapse is known in obstetric practice due to amniotic or pulmonary fluid embolism.only after proper enquiry call facilities or doctors negligent.these sudden deaths are acts of God & very little can be done even in advanced centres.unfortunately apparently well & seemingly normal patients can be victims.the patient party & public branding attending doctor negligent & holding him or her responsible for every death does not solve the problem.instead it has compounded the problem by all peripheral hospitals not accepting patients who are high risk.ultimate losers of this blaming docs for negligence trend are patients themselves.you will only worsen the situation by crying negligence at every mishap.who do you blame if a person suddenly falls dead at home or on road?who,s negligence is that?please understand..obstetrics has this situation too.what about the other patients who have delivered well & gone home?do you call the same doctor negligent for those patients?public..stop calling doctors names.you will only cause more harm.wait for enquiry report.have patience till then.once more I repeat.no doctor will kill a patient.the aim of the profession is to save lives.believe it & have faith in your treating doctor for your & their good health.

well said sharan. medicine is never a perfect science and these unfortunate incidents do happen despite best efforts. though there is no excuse for negligence and malpractice, holding a doctor responsible for anything and everything is being very unfair.

case should be examined properly & if it is a negligence case, then administration should take serious action. at the same time compensation to be given to the party.

Do you know how much a pvt. hospital charges for a simple delivery? Where else will a poor person go other than to a govt. hospital?

As if pregnancy related deaths have not taken place in reputed pvt. hospitals in recent times?

This is not the first time. I have come across many such cases in the recent past. A delivery can be handled even at home with the help of experienced ladies in and around the house. It is utter shame that it could not be managed in a hospital having nurses as well as doctors. This shows the pathetic condition of hospitals and helplessness of common man in and around Mangalore. We have the top class apartments, malls and hotels but when it comes to hospitals nobody cares!

You are right, there is something wrong to have so many incidences of delivery time deaths!! Looks like many shady nursing homes and mini hospitals have cropped up in recent times who do not have the expertise even to handle deliveries, but loot the poor!! Jai DK!!

Even if any expert doctor there , they are not safe for patients or doctor.still the number of beneficiaries from govt hospitals far outweigh the no of death's.Even if it was doctor's own blood , he couldn't have saved her in small set up . Man has not conquered death yet.
