3-year-old dies in school elevator in Hyderabad, parents protest

Hyderabad, Nov 17 (NDTV): A three-year-old girl died after getting stuck in the elevator of her school in Hyderabad on Tuesday morning.

Syeda Xanaib, a nursery student of the Sri Chaitanya School in Dilkushnagar, was being taken by her teacher from the ground floor to the third floor when she fell. Her leg reportedly slipped through the grill door and her head got pulled in when the lift started moving; she was killed instantly. There were a few other children with her.

Scores of angry parents have demanded an investigation into why a nursery school is operating from a three-storey building and whether the school had permission to build an elevator.

Soon after the horrifying accident, parents gathered outside the school and protested. Several policemen were called in to control the situation.

Police officers told NDTV that the school and the district education department appear guilty of negligence. They are investigating, among other aspects, whether the school had a lift operator at all.

"There will be serious action. We are checking if the school had permission for an elevator," said an officer.

One of the protesting parents said: "The child's father is in Dubai, working hard to earn money for her education. The school abandoned the child...It is the school's responsibility to take care of our children."

The State Child Rights Commission says the role of everyone responsible right to the district authorities should be examined. "Lifts are not allowed in nursery schools, so who gave this school permission?" questioned Achyutha Rao, a member.

Quite negligent approach of the school with regard to students' safety.Hope the government will review all schools in this matter and formulate a security policy to all the educational institutions.

two ways to look at , according to me. first thing, it could one of the very rare incident , accidentally occurred. It could have happened with anybody. that's why I referred accidentally. Or else no teacher or school wants their own children to die just like that. Just imagine the mental condition of the teacher who has seen her own student , such a small kid dying instantly in front of her eyes. So, it could be absolutely and accident, with out objecting or blaming anybody. Second way of looking is that, why there was no lift man in such a lift where it could be students running in and out. What's the condition of the lift and it's grills, whether in a good condition, serviced regularly or not. whether the infra structure is per the law and order for such a facility. If any of the above is found defaulted, school should be held responsible. And a respectful compensation should be given to the parents by the school authorities. Of course not compensating a kid's life with money, just as a penalty for the mistake of their's. That's it. Pulling the subject along will worsen the pain and sorrow...

Very sad incident .May God give peace to the departed soul and courage for the parents to withstand the grief
Important point Grill door Lifts are cheap but not safe as there is always a gap through which things can get stuck .Full door lifts are always better .But in case we have to use grill door lift care should always be taken to see that no body part is outside at any point of time while the lift moves and the lift should be checked frequently as to whether it can move even when the door is not closed completely. If found should be rectified

Both School Management and Govt authorities who gave permission should be put behind bars. They are bothered only about making. No value for human life.
