I have been studying salsa from 2003. Also I was teaching Salsa when I was in India. I am glad it is getting noticed a lot because of the salsa festivals and congresses in India. Salsa congresses are events organised to showcase the salsa talents (it can be on either local or international level) and to improve oneself (thats why there are workshops during the day time).

I can say there are 2 categories in salsa dancing. Social dancing and performance dancing. Social dancing is for fun and performance dancing is more on a high professional level (read acrobatics). About the outfit, one can do salsa socially wearing a saree, salwar kameez or any traditional Indian dress. It can be done. The difficult part is when it has to be showcased with lifts and dips as a performance to an audience.

It may become dangerous as the girl might trip over while spinning or the guy may not get a good grip while lifting his partner etc etc. However if the dress is designed in such a way that it complements the dancer's performance rather than hindering it, then we can have salsa dancing in Indian costumes.

Salsa dancing is fast growing and I am happy it has come to India/Blore to. The pictures are lovely. People take salsa classes to learn the dance form and also for fitness, it is a very gracefull form of dance which give you a correct posture to.

Mr. Nair, if your comments are on the outfit the couple has worn, then am sorry to tell you that you do not wear Indian outfit like saree, salwar khameez and and perform salsa dance. Congrats to the winners. Thanks Daiji for posting the article
