Motor bike rider falls off Bykampady over-bridge, loses life

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 5: In a tragic accident which occurred late night on Wednesday February 3, a motor bike rider fell down from the railway over-bridge at Bykampady on national highway 66, and got killed.

Naveen Rai (27), a resident of Krishnapura fifth block, lost his life in this incident. Reportedly, Rai was returning home after his duty shift hours during the night, and failed to notice that there is a steep bend near this over-bridge.

Because of delay in shifting of power cable by Mescom, this road work has not been completed, and a part of the road has remained unfinished. Although there is a huge pit near the railway bridge, no warning signs or barricades have been set up. Locals accused the department of highways of being responsible for causing this accident by its negligent stance.

Before this accident, a truck had gone out of its driver's control and hit the protective wall at the same spot.

MLA, Mohiuddin Bava, visited the spot on Thursday, and took the department of highways and contractors to task for their reckless attitude. He also instructed the officials to ensure that the family of Naveen gets justifiable compensation, failing which, he warned them of organizing agitation with the participation of general public. Traffic police officials were present.

I think of this everyday when I drive via that any time anybody may become victim of this bloody over bridge. it's a shame on the authorities. Authorities should commit suicide seeing this project. What a non sense completion. Some where wide, some where so narrow all of sudden. again wide and there stands a electric pole in the mid of the road. for few days it was open with out any barricade and indicator. luckily no fatal accidents. But it can not be escaped for ever. Naveeen has become the victim. I think almost everybody was observing this problem and thinking some day some one will die here. and unfortunately it happened.
    1. The local incharge of NH work should be suspended. It should be his property from which the victim should be compensated, not from govt money which is nothing than our tax money.

    2. Mescom should be penalised very huge amount for ignoring this problem. It was evident for so many days that an electric pole standing in the mid of the NH. they acted blind and hence should be penalised for this sin.

    3. Local MLA and all the ministers should be penalised for acting blind.

    4. With in no time bridge work should be completed adhering to the NH law and clauses.

Unfortunately , I know no action items mentioned will be acted upon. Few false tears shown and chapter will be closed, until anther death at the same bridge. That's reality.

Such a sad incident. May the soul of Naveen Rai rest in eternal peace and deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and loved ones. The Highway Authorities should be held responsible for this tragedy and the victim should get the maximum compensation.

    May Naveen Rai's soul RIP.

The Highway Authority should pay Rs 5 Cr's as compensation to the family of the deceased. The local Chief of the NH Dept should be taken to task and suspended. This is a criminal act by the NH Dept.

This accident was nothing but the alarm tone of Mescom and the Highway Authorities to wake up and complete the work.

when the bridge was opened forcefully ( so call inauguration by MLA ) without safety walls, foot path, etc. Lot of people appreciated his move.
Mr. MLA is responsible for lose of life of poor person's.
Why can't legal action be taken on him by NHAI, Railway Dept, Police dept.

If I remember correctly, Bava is the one who inaugurate this bridge. The bridge was not completed and was not safe. He should have inaugurated it after its completion and after ensuring that all safety measures have been followed. So basically, Bava is responsible for the life lost!

This is the situation all over India. It's like "chalta hai" attitude. No safety standards. We have thousands of qualified safety officers seeking jobs. None of the authorities in India have the idea about SAFETY. Safety in India is the most neglected topic.

Two days back i used this bridge i thought someday somebody going to killed by this bridge or there may be big accident. I am surprised to here person from krishnapura died. it is unfortunate because he is familiar with place. if a person from other area it is justified because he don't know what is ahead.

    Hello Mr.Rajesh Mangalore.
This bridge is not inaugurated by MP of NHAI, because of some uncompleted works. Your MLA Inaugurated before completion of work without informing anybody(NHAI, Railway of PWD) to get publicity.. u go and ask ur MLA

RIP :( ideally there should have been a flyover from Chitrapura to Deepak petrol bunk. Baikampady junction has become really a non sense place. Parked lorrys, bunch of people cross roads erratically, bus stand on road.

Added to this, this new bridge is extremely ridiculous in design. One of the worst engineering constructions I have even seen, wide roads suddenly narrows and again narrows further!! Every time i drive past, i fear for all those reckless over takers.

And as usual in the end, a common man, a beloved sun of a family loses life due to irresponsibility of govts, lack of coordination between departments, lack of road signs and at last the Indian driving sense.

PS: there is another dangerous place, the Suratkal flyover. many times big lorries or outside state vehicles fail to notice left turn before Govinda das college and continue on wrong lane at high speed (esp MRL tankers) . Even yesterday I saw a lorry speeing on wrong side. Absolutely there is no signage available.
