Mangaluru: Jammer in jail jams happiness of people, becomes nightmare

Mangaluru, Feb 17: The mobile jammer installed inside the jail on jail road near M G road in city has become a nightmare for the people in the surrounding areas, it has been revealed.
A mobile jammer was installed recently at the jail premises with the intention of jamming the mobile phones inside the jail. This was done to curb the use of mobile phones by inmates of the jail who were allegedly using them to interact with the outside world. After the twin murder recently, the police had taken measures to install ‘law and order’ inside the jail. They also discovered that substances like ganja are smuggled into the jail for consumption by some of the inmates. Recently during a raid, some mobiles used by the inmates were seized by police.
The ‘wise’ police department chose an expensive plan to stop the inmates from using the mobile phones. It installed jammer and thought the problems would end. While jammers may have helped the jail, it has become nightmare for people in the surrounding areas. The mobile users in the vicinity do not get signals in their phones. If their numbers are called, one will get ‘Switched off’ answer.
The most affected are the occupants of commercial complexes nearby. They said their businesses have been completely affected.
When several people complained to the mobile service providers four days back, they came to know that it was due to the jammer installed inside the jail premises. The problem has continued since then. Though the issue has reached the jail authorities, they have not done anything, said some people from the area. They said that it may take days or weeks for the jail authorities even to take a decision to address the issue, forget about uninstalling the jammer.
Jail authorities, when contacted, said that the technicians are working in dealing with the problem. They said the height of the tower carrying jammer has been lowered and frequency has been reduced. It is yet to be seen when the mobile phones in the area will function without any ‘interference’ from police.
