Vijay Mallya steps down from United Spirits, to move to UK

Mumbai, Feb 25 (PTI): Liquor baron Vijay Mallya on Thursday quit as chairman of United Spirits - a company set up by his family but now controlled by global liquor giant Diageo - and would shift to UK even as his group firms fight the 'wilful defaulter' tags given by lenders. MK Sharma, non-executive director and chairman of audit committee, will replace Mallya as chairman.

Mallya's exit from the board of United Spirits ends a long-drawn tussle between him and Diageo following allegations of irregularities on loans given to UB Group companies.

"The time has now come for me to move on and end all the publicised allegations and uncertainties about my relationship with Diageo and United Spirits Ltd. Accordingly, I am resigning my position with immediate effect," Mallya said in a statement announcing his departure from the company.

He further said: "I am pleased to have been able to agree terms with Diageo and USL. The agreement we have reached secures my family legacy."

Commenting on his future course of action, Mallya who agreed to a global, excluding United Kingdom, 5-year non-compete arrangement with Diageo, said: "Having recently turned 60, I have decided to spend more time in England, closer to my children."

A disgraceful exit. He had all the means to lead an ethical business life by paying up the dues to the financial institutions. The title given by one of the PSU banks declaring him "WILLFUL DEFAULTER" speaks volumes about him. He may have plenty for himself and his family but what about the Tax payers money that is due by him? Such are our honourable men in India.

Cynthia, you can also move out no one will stop you. As regards Mr. Mallya, let him go out if he can. Surely there will be legal proceedings on defaulted loans from banks.

When Khans' told about intolerance, B.D., VHP had protested against them as well as also stopped for filming of Dilwale. But in case of VijayMallya, a big fraud of India, whose KF bear & other intoxicated drinks are still in market & no B.D. & VHP have been protested against them! One thing is proved in India that telling is more dangerous than action, what do you say?

Don't blame Vijay Mallya, He is a good business man. Blame the Indian Government, Business Laws & Judiciary. Indian Government is not for the good of all its Citizens. It is only for the good of rich & well connected politicians.

If you have Rs. 2 crore loan it's your problem. If you have 20 crore loan its banks problem but if you have 200 crore loan its the government's problem.
