Kundapur, Sep 21: A state-level seminar and workshop on translation in journalism, jointly sponsored by Bhandarkar's College and the Karnataka Academy for translation was held here recently.

Inaugurating the seminar and workshop Dr Niranjan Vanalli, head of the department of postgraduate course in journalism and public media, said that a course in translation was a must for students of journalism.

Niranjan further said it was time that a suitable frame-work of syllabi was arranged and included for their benefit not only at the post graduate level but also at the under graduate level.

A student of journalism or for that matter a journalist worth his salt should learn the art of translation, if he or she wanted to make a name in the dynamic world of mass media, Niranjan informed.

The technique of translation, of late was increasingly becoming the acid test of journalism and consequently the professional journalists also. The students of journalism, nowadays, suffer from lack of clarity in thought and purity in language and expression, Niranjan lamented.

Dr Pradha Gurudutt, president of Karnataka Academy for translation, said that journalism was one of the four pillars of democracy and that it was the world window of source of knowledge as a result of which the translators were in great demand world wide.

The government of India had recently made the budget provision of Rs 250 Crore for encouraging the art and technique of translation. The trained and experienced translators will have no doubt a bright future opening a vast vista of employment opportunities, Gurudutt concluded.
