Majority of Hindus in India are secular, says Cardinal

Bengaluru, March 2,DHNS : Emphasising that India was a pluralistic country, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) and Archbishop of Trivananthapuram, Baselios Cleemis Cardinal Thottunkal, on Tuesday asserted that the majority of Hindus in the country were secular.

“Politics is certainly good, but not vote-bank politics. If the entire Hindu community in India had decided to be communal, the Christians, Muslims and Sikhs would not have been safe. Thanks be to God… the majority of Hindus in India are secular. The virtue of secularism should be celebrated by all,” Cardinal Thottunkal told reporters here on the sidelines of a press conference.

The head of the CBCI said attacks on the minority communities in India had come down, but it was derogatory statements that were creating trouble.

“There is a dignified space for everyone in India to believe, profess and propagate their faith. But when the secular fabric of the country is under attack, we all should stay together as a nation and face it,” he stressed.

He pointed out that the Christians, despite being a minuscule community, had been providing the best healthcare services in the country after the Government of India.

32nd CBCI plenary

The Cardinal said a week-long plenary assembly of the Catholic Bishops in India, which will be held in the City from March 2, would discuss various issues related to the Church and India. “As many as 180 bishops from all the dioceses in India will deliberate on the theme, “The Response of the Church in India to the Present Day Challenges,” he told reporters. Several experts and resource persons in the religious, socio-political and economic fields, including scholars from the Hindu and Muslim communities, will address the bishops. “The plenary will discuss secularism as well as interreligious dialogue,” he said.

yes true. Most of hindus are secular. most of the indians are secular. these days few hindus become aggressive because of attack on their existence directly or indirectly ,partiality, 2 nd grade treatment from the congress or other dirty politicians. Hinduism doesnt have any moto of spreading the religon or advertising the god.
i feel every indians should have to become secular. we should respect every religons and every ones faith instead targeting people to follow my god or my religon.

    No, Mr. KK,

Entire Indians, including Christians and Muslims along with Hindus are misled to believe that Hindus (especially Tribal who are poor and illiterate) are enticed to convert over food and education. I know it first hand that no conversion takes place in tribal areas because I have my own relatives among those who work in naxal affected areas helping wounded and the poor.

RSS gave an impression that those who worship other than Ram are to be brought back to the worship system if mainstream hinduism that is Ram based, not Ravan based. By calling the process as Ghar-vaapasi.

If there is no freedom of choice to choose who you want to worship, what kind of religious freedom is this ? When there is no proper understanding among Hindus, why blame other religions ?

Hindus are born Seculars, since there is no strict guidelines of worship & practices to be followed.... "Ahimsa paramo dharma" & "sarve jano sukhino bavantu" are the philosophies.....

Its freedom personified....live as you wish but let others also live & respect all....

Unfortunately few mistake this freedom as weakness & start meddling in the social fabric.....Thats the crux of the whole problem!!....

Hope the respected Cardinal understands this & implements a voluntary moratorium on this whole business of foreign funded conversions.........Lets all live in peace & mutual bonhomie....

Around 65% of the Hindus are fully secular minded see the Hindus leading the secular political parties in India. Even many who have voted for the BJP, out of the 31% of the electorate, majority of them are feeling disappointed now. They didn't vote for cow worship nationwide, but to have better jobs and a higher standard of living. But, the BJP was skyjacked by the sister parties and Mr. Modi being a hardcore RSS leader marched with the gang. Now, we see pure Gujarati imperialism and a dangerous shift towards theocracy.

One more Secretary (Intelligence) Mr.Mani said " I was tortured, burnt my body with cigarette, beaten, haraassed by higher Officials specially appointed by UPA Govt to sign on paper where Mr Chidambaram changed the affidavit.UPA Govt motto was to send Mr Modi behind bars..They tried their best..People who deserved to be honored were arrested..Finally I took voluntary retirement..Please check google or main news channels and understand the truth..

Note: Raul Gandhi is also doing deshdrohi work Like Chidrambaram..one leader went to Pakistan to get their support to defeat Modiji..Sonia Gandhi's Congress is opposite of Inidraji Congress..Right now,Mr Chidambaram is in deep s.it..He is involved in Rs 35,000 crore scam..one side scam and another side Irshant Jahan case..Chiddu will remove his lungi and run..now don't call me RSS man..I am 100% Indian.

Christianity would not have blossomed in India if the Hindus were not tolerant and secular. The Cardinal has said it right. Basically secularism means the State shall promote a single religion or levy any taxes in the name of a particular religion. Hence tolerance is most required from the citizens for all to live in harmony. Generally Secularism is always directed at the Government of the day, its attitude towards minorities and underprivileged classes and not at individual citizens or religious groups.

Its easier to manipulate people when they are weak and human mind always tries to take the easier path because what you cant get when someone is strong you can easily get that , when the other person, is weak.
Advani started the same during 1980, he hit the nation’s weak point (babri issue) by Ratha Yathra, and there onwards still its continuing in 2016.

Thats true .But for the matter of secularism we must also see how the people like ananth kumar hegde, yogi adithyanath, sakshi maharaj get the highest margin votes just on the issue of hatred towards muslims and christains is also matter of concern. As we know the christain religious leaders are the best model for the social charitarean services but when it comes to condemn the barbaric sanghis their stand at least should be better silent rather than giving full clean chit to all bjp vote bank. When a M.P candidate says he dont need muslims and christains vote OR voice versa he must be defeated.THATS CALLED SECULARISM

99% of DW readers also says same.

But as much as I know these communal things started from 1992 through Advani's yatra and continued with BD , SRS, ABVP etc with BJP's hiden agenda.

I drink, eat and live with Christian, Muslims as well as our Hindus no tension at all.

No doubt khangress vote bank politics forced hindus feel insecure in their own motherland...

Why Kashmiri Pandits ( hindus ) have been living in abject conditions in refugee camps at delhi ???

Was not in Kashmiri militants have destroyed at least 140 temples ???

Despite this we strongly believe INDIA IS HOME FOR MUSLIM , CHRISTIANS , SIKHS, BUDDIST AND JAINS..

    Jeevan,

You and me would not have been living to read/write this if it wasn't for our ancestor's battle to drive away invaders. Then, why aren't Kashmiris returning to their native place to fight for their rights ? Kashmiris have left their abode to settle elsewhere, from where they are not willing to return. No Indian is eligible to buy land in Kashmir except for a native Kashmiri. That is the reasons the place became an abode of those who survived the hardships there !

Don't blame anybody else for this !

what Modi and his govt doing ????? why cant they settle Kashmiri Pandits in their original homes / lands...this proves that either the govt is impotent OR Pandits are not willing to go back.... OR this may be a ploy, if the Kashmiri pandits return to their homes, then this RSS goondas will not find any opportunity to fish in troubled waters....that is why the problem of Kashmiri pandits problem is kept alive....

    SK,

So true ! Two agendas of BJP will be alive for thousands of years to come, are : (1) Ram Mandir building (2) Re-settling Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir.

BJP made people get so convinced of the fact that Congress is never interested in giving this gift to Indians. Its only BJP who can do it. However, NDA did not do it under ABV and they will not do it under Modi government too.

Because, if these two issues will be settled, there will be no agenda left for the party to entice Indian Hindus. Period !

Lydia Lobo , you can give 1000 reasons but Kashmiri pundits were displaced only because of their religion !! now who will want to back and settle down with those people who never recognise the service/ help of ARMY when they are in trouble last year with flood ..sadly none of party or so called secular champions come to rescue of that community!

There are mad dogs there to tear apart these pandiths if they go back and settle in the kashmir valley. The environment where you are born will always be close to your heart. The Pandits would want to return but there is no guarantee that they wont be attacked once again.

OF LATE BECAUSE OF CONGRESS GIVING TOO MUCH IMPORTANCE TO MINORITIES AT THE COST OF MAJORITY WHO WERE NOT IDENTIFIED IN ANY PARTICULAR PARTY MAKES THEM COMPULTIONS TO JOIN WITH SOME GROUPS FOR SAFTY.
IF BOTH THE SO CALLED NATIONAL PARTIES BEHAVE MATURED ENOUGH WITHOUT ANY CHEAP POLITICS THE SITUATION CAN FURTHER IMPROVE WITH MINIMUM CASUALITIES ON EITHER SIDE.
CARDINAL SHOULD COME OUT AGAINST PARTIES WHO PLAY WITH PEOPLES LIFE FOR THEIR ELECTORAL BENEFIT.

Marriage being one of the sacred rituals of Hindu community, your opinion carry lot of sense. May be you are expressing an honest opinion complimenting goodness about Christians. I only wish your views doesn't prompt any Hindu's feel bad.

Though i may not be worthy enough to give advise, but please be aware & beware of moral policing (Smart city phenomena... lol).

If your statement comes from a Hindu girl, then the matter would probably take a turn which is distasteful to many (such incidents may probably substantiate Cardinal's view point).., In other words, secular in mind but not in action.

Though my above views may be wrong, patriots are welcome to correct.
