Bengaluru: 60 nuns pledge to donate eyes, become vision ambassadors

Media Release

Bengaluru, Feb 2: In a laudable step, about sixty nuns from various congregations pledged to donate their eyes in a programme organised at the Indian Institute of Spirituality in Bengaluru recently. More than just pledging to donate their eyes, they also committed to take this message back to their congregations and places of work, thus becoming vision ambassadors.

They were led to this decision by The Project Vision movement that is working for the visually challenged persons, an initiative of the Claretian Fathers under the leadership of Fr George Kannanthanam. An awareness programme for the sisters motivated them to work for this cause. According to Fr George, this is a Biblical work since Jesus had a special love for the blind people, as expressed through the six bible miracle stories of curing them.

India has one third of the world's visually challenged people. It is the responsibility of every citizen and more so the religious who are specially committed to the society, to respond this situation. There are 39 million visually challenged people in the world, out of which 15 million are in India. Their life situation is miserable due to the physical, social, psychological and economic challenges they face. Most of them just do not find it possible to survive and hence give up.

During the programme, the different ways of helping the visually challenge were presented. Fr George told them not to bury or burn their eyes. They could be eyesight for someone else. He urged them to leave them back after their death, for someone who has never seen the world.

Eye donation sadly has not become a norm in the society. India needs about 140,000 cornea operations a year, but only about 40,000 corneas are donated, leaving about 100,000 people to the waiting list for a cornea transplant. Thus there is need for promoting this as a movement so that eventually eye donation would become a norm in the society. These sisters working in different parts of the country will carry this message to the places of their work and spread it through their communities and institutions.

Fr George urged each one of them to be a vision ambassador by promoting this cause. Vision ambassador will also do the very important role of coordinating between the bereaved family and the eye bank in the event of someone’s death. They need to talk to the family members to encourage them to make a decision to donate the eyes of their deceased family member. If they are ready, the nearest eye bank is to be contacted so that the eyes can be harvested within six hours for transplant.

If all the religious of India would take up this as a part of their commitment to this most suffering group of blind people, the entire of need of cornea transplant can be met.

Just inform your relatives to take your body to nearest Govt Hospital or any tertiary hospital with Transplant facility .Many centres are available for registration like KMC Manipal .But actually at the time of death relatives should take care to give out within 6 hours

The gesture of donating their own eyes in order to contribute towards 15 million others in India who are deprived of their eye sight is extremely noble and commendable. These NUNS must be specially gifted with the special blessings from God so as to come forward and donate their own eyes.

We have however one humble comment to make. Our eyes being the most valuable parts of our body thru which we can see the world and help the world will be suddenly departed of 120 eyes. Without our own eyes we will be totally handicapped. Without the eyes we may have to depend other 240 people in this world to help us and guide us.

If these 60 nuns retain their eyes, thru the kindness of their own heart and eyes, they perhaps can help 6000 other human beings in one form or another. Giving up our own eyes we invite the darkness and we invite a kind of helplessness. We might be a burden ourselves for many others that surround us.

This is purely an observation. We may be missing something that we ourselves cannot read or understand. Please explain. thanks

Very noble gesture. I bow to the sisters. I think Daiji should cover more this kind of stories which gives a sense of happiness to everybody. Recently Mr Chakravarthi Sulibele and Yuva Brigade did a huge campaign on eye donation on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda birthday and this was a great success with hundreds of people all over Karnataka pledging to donate the eyes. I think covering such stories will increase the faith between various communities.

I appreciate the Great gesture by Sisters .But the problem in India is something else That is convincing the relatives of the dead ,removing the eye balls of the dead within 6 hours of death and depositing in a proper Eye Bank .And hence it will be a great job if they could do this .About 10 years back we appointed one Sister Grace ( Retired Matron who originally is from Mangalore )as Counsellor at Cooper hospital ,Juhu .Madam Grace could convince and make available Hundreds and Hundreds of eye balls every year .She would convince the relatives of dead very nicely .Thanks to sister Grace
