Mangaluru, Mar 7: Hundreds of faithful on Monday March 7 walked from Bendore to Mudipu covering a distance of 22 km to gain Indulgence in the Year of Mercy.
Indulgence is the granting of freedom from punishment still due for sin after sacramental absolution. As per the desire of the Pope, the bishop of Mangaluru has declared 12 places in the diocese as pilgrimage places which include St Joseph Vaz Shrine at Mudipu. One can receive special Indulgence by visiting one of the pilgrimage places, by making a true confession, by receiving communion during the Holy Eucharist and by praying for Pope’s intentions.
Accordingly, early mornig on Monday, about 400 devotees from St Sebastian Church, Bendore, started their journey on foot and reached St Joseph Vaz Shrine by afternoon.
Parish priest of Bendore Fr Antony Serrao addressing the faithful at Mudipu said, "The walkathon is being held to seek forgiveness from the Almighty. People live their lives as though there is no pardon. May everyone receive God's mercy through this walk."
Those who were unable to walk the entire distance took buses at various points to reach Mudipu. After reaching, the people waited for each other at Mudipu cross road, and once everyone had assembled, together walked up to the shrine on the hill.
