Missing priest in Yemen abducted, rescue bid on: Govt

New Delhi, Mar 27 (DHNS):The Centre on Saturday said it was trying to secure the release of Father Tom Uzhunnallil, who was kidnapped by militants from a Missionaries of Charity home in Yemen.

“Fr Tom Uzhunnallil – an Indian national from Kerala was abducted by a terror group in Yemen. We r making all efforts to secure his release (sic),” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj posted on Twitter.

Uzhunnallil hails from Kerala and worked in Bengaluru before leaving for Yemen. He was kidnapped on March 4 when Islamic State militants stormed the home for the elderly and disabled run by the Missionaries of Charity at Aden in war-torn Yemen.

The terrorists killed 12 people, including four nuns. One of the nuns, Cecilia Minz, was from India.

The terrorists tied the nuns and others to trees and shot them in their heads. Sister Sally, the sole survivor of the attack, later reported that the terrorists had taken 56-year-old Uzhunnallil with them.

Franciscan Sisters of Siessen, which is based in South Africa, earlier this week posted on Facebook that the kidnapped priest might be crucified by the IS on the occasion of Good Friday. This triggered concerns about his fate.

New Delhi, however, received no information indicating any imminent threat to Uzhunnallil’s life, sources said on Saturday.

What has made efforts to rescue Uzhunnallil all the more difficult is that India no longer has a diplomatic mission in Yemen, which has been ravaged by a conflict since early 2015 when Saudi Arabia started air strikes to support forces and militias loyal to deposed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in their fight against rebel Houthis.

India, in April 2015, shifted its embassy in Sanaa to neighbouring Djibouti. The Centre deployed warships, merchant vessels and planes to evacuate altogether 4,741 Indians from Yemen.

There is nobody to blame. As mentioned by @Alphonso Rodrigues, Udupi, Govt of India has given, multiple warnings/Requests to all the Indians to return to the native.

At the same time,as mentioned by @ Lydia Lobo, Kadri,"but charity workers have no choice, they feel blessed to die serving the needy than flee".As she pointed out ,there is a difference between those who work for pay and those who for needy.

My only request is please dont blame Modi if something goes wrong.Because this is the first Govt which proactively taking steps to rescue Indians who face risk aboard.

I pray this priest comes back. The Govt of India had issued stern warnings after warnings for all Indians to evacuate Yemen even before the war began. All of them had come back. Except some who preferred to stay for 'God Knows what' reason . Now they become a burden to the Govt and then blame the Govt for not evacuating them.

    Mr. D'Souza,

It was rumoured that Fr. Tom was to be crucified on Good Friday by the militant group that abducted him. Throughout the Good Friday service, there was a dreading tremble within me whether Fr. Tom is dead by now. If he was, who would you have thanked ??

Indian Government is assisting its citizens abroad no matter Mr. Modi is the PM or MMS was. Its because, Indians abroad are an asset, not a liability. So much to remember is enough for you to be fortunate to be an Indian abroad, nobody else is eligible for the credit.

Fools stay behind in war zones inspite of repeated govt. warnings.. How can they be assets to the nations?
They are burdens on the nation. If Modi has rescued one, you need to thank him.

    Shankar,

There are more nations in the world that are safer, where Indians work and send home money. Therefore they are an asset, not a liability.

True that people stills stay behind despite warnings to leave such zones (example the nurse died in Libya) but charity workers have no choice, they feel blessed to die serving the needy than flee.

You can't draw parallel between those who work for a pay and doing selfless service. Their service in war-torn Yemen is a reply to your frequent taunt as to why charity work is not happening in risk-zones !

How come he is an asset to the nation when he is serving there for charity??? He is getting paid for charity works??? If he getting paid for his services then it cannot be charity and if he is not getting paid then he can't remit funds back to India and hence he is a liability.. I can consider on humanity basis but not yet cost of risking lives of government officials who will be on rescue mission

    Guru & Shankar,

Will you evaluate a service of an army-man with the amount he is being paid ? No ! You will (me too) say his service is worth much more than what is paid to him because he is serving Bharat Maata in place us all.

Similarly, a charity worker is not doing his duty for what he is receiving in return - whether it is in monetary form or in consular services' form.

Like a soldier is for a nation, so is a charity worker for those who follow his belief. When a brother/sister dedicate themselves for charity, the family members write them off from their personal relationship and give them away to the world as a brother and a sister.

It is irrelevant whether Fr. Tom comes back alive or not, whether the Indian Government succeeds in their efforts to negotiate with the abductors, the entire Christian society will pray silently for his return and will never hold the government responsible before or after the abduction/release. If negotiation was possible could so many US captives have died ? Do you guys think that Sushma Swaraj or Mr. Modi will put their hands in the mouth of a lion and snatch its prey ?

Christians will celebrate if the priest comes back alive or pray for his sainthood because of the troubles and trials he sustained while working for a good cause just as it happened with those nuns who got killed in this very episode.

    Guru,

One thing you must be informed of is that the money being spent does not come from the Indian Government but from people who are taking consular services in respective countries.

For example, the people who seek services of the India Consulate in Yemen are charged a certain amount of fees that is reserved for emergencies like rescue of Indians in trouble in that region. Therefore, please do not be under the belief that Indian Government is sending money abroad to look after people who have gone there to earn money.

As for the priest who is abducted, it was a home for the old-aged and the disabled, where the missionaries of charity workers offered the service. Imagine a stable government in Yemen, how much the missionary services would have been appreciated ? Well, militants do not understand good or bad. Now after the abduction episode, you may assume the state of the center without volunteers to help the disabled and the aged.

Who is taking consular services in Yemen or Syria from last 2 years?? Is the money earned from consular service enough to pay terrorists to release him??? Who sent him to war zone, why organisation is not helping him??? Why government should use its machinery to rescue a person who went there at his own risk??? Who will take responsibility if anything goes wrong during rescue mission which might lead to killing several other government official????

@Guru Mangalore,I cant understand your argument of saying why These People went there of their own. Please think These People are not going there of own.Their heads are sending them where more Need is.charity work is done where locals have not enough trained or religious are not there. You cant runaway because of Terror or govt.has ordered.what will the old People do when lokals hesitate or nobody is there.?Do we runaway when a war breakout leaving our beloved and trusted ones are there?same Schema.Religious ones dedicated their life for the poor and needy.when abducted like here, govt.has the duty to rescue their nationals.Hope and pray he will be alright. So many religious People gave their life in the past, become martyrs.so will be her too when goes wrong. He has no choice in the Hands of These fanatic People. He went their to look after their People.when they dont realize it?

    @ Lydia Lobo,
Fees paid for consular services are accounted for the Govt. of India since all consulates and embassies overseas function under the M.E.A., New Delhi. The employees in these institutions are govt. servants of India and are paid on account of the Indian Govt.
