Mangaluru, Mar 27: The bishop of Mangaluru diocese Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza on Sunday March 27 inaugurated the Catholic Caterers Association by unveiling its logo in a ceremony held in the Bendore Church hall here.

In his inaugural address, the bishop called upon the Catholic leaders to work for the benefit of the community. "Many of our leaders have reached great heights in their lives. But there are still quite a few who are struggling. I call upon the successful ones to help them as it will indirectly contribute to the development of our community."

He further added, "We have many organizations in our community, but they will be successful only when their members work together. Along with working for personal benefits, they must also work for the association. I wish good luck to the association."

Chief guest of the function, MLA of Mangaluru South constituency J R Lobo expressed his wish that the association would motivate the Catholic caterers to uphold our culture. "Since ages we have been known for our culture. Our traditional dishes are not only delicious but also healthy. But in recent days they have become globalized and have lost their quality. If we give importance to our traditional dishes we can save our culture.

"Whenever the members of the association come together to discuss about their demands and other issues, they must also discuss ways to improve the quality of food. Along with this, the association must also support budding entrepreneurs who want to make it big in the field," he said.

MLC Ivan D'souza said, "We have a big question before us, that is, why was such an association not formed in the past? Through this association the caterers have become more responsible. It will also create a platform to address the problems and issues of both the caterers and the consumers.

"Since this a service industry, if one ventures into this one can make phenomenal progress by providing good service. I hope this association would improve the quality and standard of the food," he added.

President of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy Roy Castelino, superior of Prashanth Nivas Ashram Sr Sylvia, corporator Lancelot Pinto, MECOM engineer Sunil Montheiro also spoke on the occasion.

Wife of the late John D'Souza, founder of MDSouza & Sons, Caterers & Bakers, and Thomas Pinto from Bajpe, popularly known as Thomas Cook were felicitated on the occasion.

President of the association Alwyn Pinto welcomed the gathering while secretary Divya D'Souza rendered the vote of thanks.

Treasurer Ivan D'souza explained the motive behind forming the association. Hera compered the programme.

About Catholic Caterers Association

Alwyn Pinto, proprietor of Aroma Caterers came up with the idea of forming Catholic Caterers Association with an aim to help solve problems faced by caterers. In July 2015, he invited all the caterers of the region to Woodlands Hotel and thus began the Catholic Caterers association.

After receiving tremendous response from caterers of Moodbidri, Puttur, Vittal, many more caterers joined the association and in the following meetings leaders were elected to give direction to the association. Alwyn Pinto of Aroma Caterers was elected the president, Divya D’Souza of MDSouza Caterers, the secretary and Ivan D'Souza of Aaron caterers, the treasurer of the association.

The association provides a platform to discuss issues related to catering. The members also give their expert solutions to problems faced by caterers. The caterers find solutions to their problems through feedback from their fellow caterers. The association also helps in obtaining food license, FSSAI certificate, service and income tax etc. The organization also helps caterers on food and hygiene practices along with appropriate waste management through workshops.

The primary concern of the association is to raise the standard of food quality and obtain business partnership from the Catholic community. The Association has many plans to strengthen this group of entrepreneurs by improving fellowship and relations within and working together to not only upgrade themselves in terms of standards and professionalism, but more importantly, work together for the betterment of the community.

Too much of Religion!!. World over it seems that Religion is creating more divisions than uniting people.

The idea of forming an association with an objective of providing quality service is a welcome move. It is but natural for the young entrepreneurs to expect support from the community too. The community people, by and large, approach the community caterers for the required services. However, the way their pain is expressed is unacceptable.
Just as forming an association is a constitutional right, the exercise of freedom of choice is also a constitutional right. People are guided by the criteria of ‘quality’ and ‘excellence’ while choosing goods and services. Irrespective of community, people are hardly willing to sacrifice quality and excellence. That is the reason why our educational institutions, health organizations and other services are flourishing.
Each community has its own food habits due to its culture and tradition, of course, influenced by religious practices. So we feel obliged to provide them food of their choice - vegetarian prepared by vegetarians, ‘halal’ prepared by their own community people. When we invite guests, we want them to eat without inhibitions. The catholic caterers too contribute to this practice by outsourcing the preparation of vegetarian food or halal food. Situation being so, it is evident that the community obtains necessary services from suppliers of other communities too.
A lot of precautions, restraints and efforts may be necessary for preventing the present move from turning counterproductive. When some religious heads exhorted and brought pressure on community people, a couple of years ago, to send their children to schools run by their own community, many expressed their displeasure with the emerging trend. It may lead to further marginalization of the community. If other communities resort to the idea of community for community, a number of associations will take place – Doctors, lawyers, professionals, merchants, farmers, industrialists, and so on. And imagine, each one expects to promote their own people! A day may come when goods and services by one community may be refused to another community. Can our community face this situation without side effects?
For politicians there is no embarrassment. They will participate in such programmes organized by other communities also and sing the same song-“exhort the community people to support their own community and promise all help from the government and local administration’. Let election come, they will play a different song. Elected representatives need to exercise lot of restraints as they represent the whole constituency.
What about religious heads who promote Christian teachings and inter faith dialogue. We are exhorted to go beyond community feelings in order to achieve Universal brotherhood. Here is my confusion. While it is advisable to inject religion into politics, it is disastrous to inject politics into religion. Here is my confusion and concern.

Dear CCA, as the saying goes you take care of Paisa & Rupees take care of themselves. Same way take good care of old time recipe & orders shall follow. Give equal importance to professional Ranpi & Ranpin. Don't be a total commercial minded. Avoid waste of food & maintain hygiene all around the cooking & serving area.

Congratulations to the members of the newly formed Association of Catholic Caterers. I do agree with Sandy Udupi, that in business & services we should be cosmopolitan and the formation of any association should be to set high standards, help budding entrepreneurs in the community and collaborate with caterers from other communities to provide a healthy and broad choice of cuisine in which we may not have expertise. The Association should promote healthy competition as that will benefit the consumer and not encourage community based monopoly. Such an approach is counter productive in the long run and would isolate the community in other spheres of business and industry

I wonder why a professional association has to be based on the religious beliefs of the proprietor. And next I guess we will have Protestant caterer's association. Then a Hindu and Muslim caterers association. Then the Hindus will have one association for each caste shettre, bhatre, konkana, poojary, mogaveera etc etc. Much like the Indian associations in the Middle East. Being communal seems to be deeply imprinted in our make up. We can never work as countrymen!

Thomas Cook was probably the first catholic caterer of Mangalore ? His "home cooking" was great in the 1970's with the "ranpies" to help him out.

It is nice to know that the Catholic Caterers of Mangalore have now formed as association so that they can group together and share their ideas and strategies not only to render their catering services to the public but also enable them to work together for a peaceful survival.

Associations can help each of the members to identify the local markets and provide better service to their clients not only by being able to compete in a healthy manner but also expand the market.

Mangalore has always been a "City of Joy" with so many social and religious gatherings, and also many funerals and communal festival. Good catering always beautifies the occasion where the hosts as well as their guests get the best benefit of joy.

We have had the privilege of working with so many caterers in and around Mangalore, and all of them have given a good service. Some times we even forgot to settle our bill, and when we returned back to our destination we sent them a check, and they gladly accepted it.

Catering therefore is a good business that not only beautifies the occasion but also renders many job opportunities, strengthens the community and benefits everybody.

We wish best of success to the Catholic Caterers Association. Food business is always a tough business, but somebody has to do it, so that the ultimate benefit is mutual, and good Caterers make every occasion easy and comfortable to the hosts by taking away the important responsibility.

In the olden days, for instance, the Roce, Wedding and 'Porthopone' was a joint fun and enjoyment of the neighboring families. Now most of the neighbors have either gone for their heavenly reward or gone abroad. Caterers therefore play an important role on all the gatherings in Mangalore. May God bless them all, and wishing you all a very Happy Easter
