Mangaluru: Brain-dead man's organs harvested at AJ Hospital

Mangaluru, Apr 5: In yet another cadaver donation, a brain-dead man's organs were harvested at AJ Hospital in the city and taken to Bengaluru on Tuesday April 5.

Babu K V, a 34-year-old construction worker from Vadasery village near Payyanur, Kannur district, Kerala had a fall from the first floor while working at a construction site near Cheemeni, Payyanur.

Babu sustained head injuries and was rushed to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital and after first aid was shifted to AJ Hospital. He was admitted to AJ Hospital on Saturday April 2 evening. He was declared brain dead on Monday April 4 midnight.

Soon after, the team at AJ Hospital swung into action and approached Babu’s brother for the organ donation with the help of a journalist Aneesh Balan of Deshabhimani who is from Babu's hometown.

With the family's permission, Babu's liver was harvested and taken to Bengalur by 10 pm from AJ Hospital as per the directive of Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK). His kidneys too were harvested, and one of the kidneys will be transplanted at AJ Hospital itself.

Babu is survived by parents, wife Sandhya, 3-year-old daughter Diya and a brother.

'Jeevanvileena', the organ donation awareness campaign by AJ Hospital is yielding results and more people are volunteering / helping people donate organs.

    Great humanitarian act and shall be remember even after Bab's death.
    In his death he saved some people from the sufferings and likely deaths. Some financial help to the poor family member too. (Not intended)

    My hats off to Babu's brother for giving consent to donate,Babu's vital organs. Babu was declared brain dead by AJ Hospital after a fall while working. Good job done by the team at AJ Hospital.
