Udupi, Oct 11: A one-day workshop on writing for media organised jointly by the District Working Journalists’ Association and the Communication and Humanities Association of the Madhav Pai Memorial College at Manipal was held on Wednesday October 10.
K V Nagaraj, Reader of Mangalore University inaugurated the workshop. In his inaugural address he stated that communication is power and language is the strength of media. He opined that it’s very essential to make use of language in an appropriate manner while writing for the media.
“Language, Nagaraj stated is a dynamic force and it is inter-related with the culture of the nation. Language was born in culture and culture developed through language”, he declared. He however, rued the fact that the impact of globalization and technology on media has resulted in the usage of tabloid language in writing, thereby leading to language becoming the victim of commodification.
Prof Nagaraj advised students to be familiar with the ethical aspects of languages before venturing into serious journalism and exhorted them to venture into field journalism in-order to experience real life situations.
A Dinesh Kini, staff correspondent of The New Indian Express was the chief guest and Prof P Dayanand Shetty, principal of the College, presided over the programme.
Nithyananda Padre, sub-editor of Udayavani led discussion on ‘Writing for print media’ while Jayaram spoke on preparing scripts for TV programmes.
At the technical sessions Sibanthi Padmanabha, reporter, Deccan Herald, Mangalore, spoke on ‘Status of print media’, Vasanth Kumar Perla from Akashavani, Mangalore delivered a talk on ‘Writing for Radio programmes’.
Prof Sripathi Tantry, former principal of the College and reporter of Samyuktha Karnataka, Udupi, Kiran Manjanbailu were the chief guests at the valedictory programme held in the evening.
