Mangaluru, Apr 19: Forest and ecology minister and district in-charge B Ramanath Rai has appealed to the people of Mangaluru and the district to use drinking water judiciously and has sought co-operation from public, while announcing that drinking water will be supplied on alternate days in the city from April 20.

Addressing media persons at the Circuit House here on Monday April 18, he said, "The water level in the dams supplying drinking water in the city has considerably come down due to a decrease of 21 percent in the rainfall during the last monsoon, as compared to regular rainfall. Now the water level stands at 9.6 feet in the Thumbay dam as compared to 12.7 feet last year and in AMR dam the level is 13.9 meters as compared to 17.8 meters. MRPL and other industries have agreed to accept the supply of drinking water on alternate days. Hence, water will be supplied to all the households in the city on alternate days. As situation has worsened we seek the co-operation of the public.

"I also request the public not to lift the water from the river basin for the agricultural purposes. I also urge the builders not to use drinking water supplied by the MCC for construction activities. Out of the total purified water 2 MGD water will be supplied to Thumbay and Arkula areas through the old water line to fulfill their drinking water demand," he informed.

MLA J R Lobo said that the MCC officials must clean the barren open wells and use that water to provide drinking water to the neighboring areas, while mayor Harinath instructed the officials to activate the dried borewells. "No drinking water will be supplied to construction sites from April 20 and wherever there is leakage, the pipes will be repaired immediately," the mayor said.

"As per current consumption, the available water for the city is sufficient only for 12 days. If it doesn't rain by May, it will last for little over 20 days with supply on alternative days," he added.

"The public and the officials have to be prepared for the situation," said DC A B Ibrahim.

Sports minister Abhaychandra Jain, MLA Mohiuddin Bava, SP Dr Sharanappa, city police commissioner Chandra Sekhar were present during the meeting.

Please ask our congress legislators from DK who support this project.

Also there are no plans to desilt the existing rivers of its sand. The water during the monsoon overflows from the dam and goes to the sea. Our highly qualified Legislators do not understand this and are only busy cutting ribbons on a daily basis. They seem to be elected only for this purpose.

Let me know also join my voice with Mr.Donald Roche, my neighbour, who has given his valid and genuine comment & opinion regarding the seepage or drain of Sewage Water to our Well also, which has caused us not to use Well Water, which all of us were using for 70(Seventy)Years without any problem of these sort. I still remember this Dirty Drain & Man Hole was erected almost 50(Fifty) Years before, without any maintenance or repairs by the so called civic authorities(shame on them).Because of their gross negligence most of the well water our neighborhood areas were contaminated, despite we have emptied all the well and took hygienic measures to clean the well water at our cost and expenses.

Still due to the seepage and leakage from the nearby Manhole/Drainage non-of us are in position to utilise the Water from these wells for our daytoday purpose. These so called shameless Politicians and Bureaucrats have no concern for the sufferings of common man. The Boneless Tongues of these authorities can move to any direction to fool the masses. We request the concerned authorities to look in to this matter seriously not only in our area but whole of Mangalore City, so that the citizens can help each others during the time of Serious Water Scarcity, with Help of God Given natural Wealth of Well Water. We are over consuming our resources. The biggest problem is the increasing population, which puts tremendous stress on our resources. This is not something new that our water levels are depleting. each year it is going down and down. the eco balance is being neglected.

Do the politicians have the guts to take on religion which are promoting population?

The water levels are depleting, temperatures are rising. farmers are crying.

each year the same story Ramanath Rai will chair a meeting on judicious use of water. Do not use water for farming. use water for drinking. so what are the farmers going to do?. Rai will suggest instead of 5 glass of water drink 2 glass of water each day. instead of taking bath each day take bath every alternate day.

what is the permanent solution Mr Rai?

Is there a policy on rational population? can we take on religious lobbies?

what are the alternatives when our carbon resources go empty?

Can you Mr rai give extrapolated position of water tables say a decade from now?. what is the long term policy?

Before unduly worrying about not getting the 'Smart City" tag, Mangalureans have to first tackle their severe drinking water crisis, sufficient supply of pure drinking water being the basic necessity.

There can be no short cuts, no magical solutions. But, as a lay-person, I feel the following steps could help in easing the problem, over a period of 5-10 years:

-Convene a a brainstorming session of people consisting of leading Environmentalists, Ecologists, Watershed Management Experts, Hydrologists & Conservationists (It would be best to leave out political leaders, administrative officials, builders, other people with vested interests, as far as possible) and form a Core Committee of dedicated citizens.
e.g., Smart, selfless, dedicated leaders like Yatish Baikampady of Panambur Beach Tourism fame, have shown how things can be done fast and efficiently, without involving vested interests.

-Taking care of mother nature by increasing the tree and green cover, avoiding wastage of precious water through leakage and misuse, rainwater harvesting etc., could go a long way in easing the problem.

-Setting up of a desalination plant can be considered as a last resort, only if other measures do not help in solving the problem.

-Once the master-plan is prepared, a permanent committee should be formed and sufficient funds should be released by the Municipal Corporation through a budget allocation, without any political interference. End-use of funds to be properly monitored through frequent audits by a reliable 3rd party agency.

Wow. Didn't expect it to be this bad. A place where I can see a lot of water wasted is Mangala Stadium. Everyday the turf in the center and the track are watered in the morning and again in the evening. I don't know the source of their water, but if it is drinking water supplied by MCC then they need to stop at once. One can imagine the amount of water required to water the entire ground. And the sprinklers are on for an hour or so. Colossal waste of water in my opinion.

The ground needs to be maintained but in such situations some adjustments have to be made.

    Daijiworld kindly look into this.

We have a very good well which was a source of drinking water for many years for 10to 12 houses even up to end of May . Now due to the seiphage of a drainage near by which is not at all maintained by the Corporation, the well water is now not at all potable. With so many complaints and request to the corporation they have not done anything. Same is the fate of other wells in our area. If the corporation takes serious measures in changing the drainage net work, and empty dirty water from the wells then our City will not have such water crisis.

Government can do nothing if rains doesn't come in time. Water is precious n valuable resource. species go extinct without water. People should be aware of consequences of irresponsible management of water bodies. Unnecessary usage of water like cleaning of vehicles, gardening, construction work etc shud stop til monsoon sets in.

Beware of people who do business by selling water without licence. Many crooks have dug many private bore Wells n wells and selling water in exorbitant rates to public. This dishonest money making mafia must be curbed. These looters sell mud from government land.

MESCOM linemen are culling trees mercilessly in an erratic indiscriminate way and causing huge damage to environment. Does any tree harms humans? In the guise of clearing line they venture to cut everything But no one cares. Culling of trees must be a criminal offence. Unnecessary cutting trees has many consequences and these consequences will echo in eternity.

It has a very good spring and the well is almost full even in the month of May. It could sustain entire Falnir area i guess. Many demolished tile factories of Mangalore in Bolar / Boloor / Tillery road / Morgan Gate areas have big open wells too. Water can be pumped for the surrounding area. Engineer Mr.Shiva Shanker,He sent Mr.Laxman Poojary to inspect site. He replied that it is not His territory but of Narayan Shenoy. He never showed Up nor Contacted me. When I contacted Him,He is always at meeting or function or sick. I have requested the contractor not to close the pit. They agreed and after I left the spot they dumped the dirt and closed the pit. I have witnesses for this action of Contractor. I am sure water is still running underground.
Any one of you contact the Emergency line and complain. The result is 50%. Only Public is going to suffer in this matter.
Construction people tap into water line and use the water through help of water Dept. I have proof of it and I have brought past Mayor Rajani and immediately shut the lines.
Mr Ibrahim, you are the only Person in Office We public trust. MLA and other Corrupt Elected Officials only talk for publicity Purpose.
How many Car Washes are using the drinking water for their vehicle washing. Do they have water meter or they just have Corporators helping hand. Hope water will come down more and then only public will rise up with open eyes. I have done all my best to help the public but it is like spitting in the wind. None of the officials care,so why banging head.
I have decided to send the matter to PMO with Photo copies to prove my point along with witness letters.

PMO too must be fed up. First the Government should make Government Servants accountable for civic condition of the country - This will not happen for 200 years.

    Won't give water for construction....

    Should I believe you?

If you can do it, you deserve my praise.

If I prove that you didn't do it, will you quit politics?

Hard to believe that the place which have annual rainfall of around 400cm have shortage of drinking water ! We should learn how to store water and to use judiciously.

Still do we need in Yettinahole project to be implemented? Please give importance to rain water harvesting, conserve forests and wild life.
