Mangaluru: Prison staff get tips on how to enhance efficiency, beat stress

Mangaluru, Apr 27: The state department of prisons in association with Vruksham Talent Group, Bengaluru, conducted a two-day training programme on capacity building for the staff of Mangaluru prison here on Wednesday April 27.

Jail superintendent Krishnamurthy, who addressed the trainees, said that the training programme was organised with the objective of enhancing professional skills and ability to deal with various situations efficiently against all odds and without slipping into stress.

District sessions court judge Uma M G in her inaugural address said, "Vruksham has conducted such a programme for the fist time in Mangaluru prison. Such programmes conducted by professionals would be helpful in instilling new vigour and zeal among the jail staff. Today about fifty percent of the staff in government departments have an inferiority complex, dissatisfaction etc. This may be due to lack of staff or they may feel that their efforts are not valued, or due to other aspects. This is affecting their efficiency and quality of work.

"Resigning to the situation say 'this is my fate' and working with dissatisfaction will not only affect work but also one's personal life. Everyone has taken up their respective jobs on their own will and no one has forced them. When you hate or are dissatisfied with your job, it will not change the situation. Working happily and with patience will improve the ambiance at workplace and create a positive environment for self and colleagues. I see more women police personnel here. Women have proved that they are second to none and they too can perform with the efficiency. Such programmes will be helpful in enhancing professional skills and ability to deal with various situations efficiently."

Superintendent of police, Dr Sharanappa S D said, "Currently, every jail in the nation is overfilled with prisoners. This has created more pressure on prison staff. We should work towards doing something good to the society. This is possible only when all of us commit ourselves to the single goal of serving the society. If all the prison staff make a resolution that they will not allow any illegal activity to take place in the prison, then it is surely possible. Live a life of contentment, live with dignity and pride."

    Enhancing Efficiency in the Prisons is an active and never-ending assignment. As the population grows and as the affluence also grows due to better economy, crime rates will continue to increase in every society, and Mangalore therefore is not an exception.

    Giving the best of training for the inmates, both men and women, with best of Education, Health and Fitness and also many other extra-curricular activities to the inmates during difference seasons is an essential fact.

    We would be more than happy to introduce a Toastmasters Leadership Program in the Prison System of Mangalore so that our men and women behind the bars will have a Weekly gathering to meet and share their Leadership talents that will keep them motivated with new ideas to sharing their talents and abilities, and also keep them concentrated on various new ideas of helping each other within the tall walls and seclusion.

    Once we have the blessings from the Prison authorities then we can produce to them some of the Leadership related material and outline them the type of Weekly gatherings and programs that we shall conduct for the betterment of not only the assigned Members but also few other Guests that can be accommodated within the prison facilities that are made available.

    This kind of gesture will also motivate many of the Toastmaster volunteers that will come forward and join the group of assigned volunteers so that they too are trained to cope with the Prison systems and adhere to all the required Rules and Regulations.

    Each and every volunteer also has to be trained well and disciplined well so that they are also fully made aware of the disciplines attached in conducting the Toastmasters Leadership Programs for the benefit of not only the inmates but also the rest of the Prison Guards.

    Toastmasters Program within the jail system can be a rewarding experience both for the volunteers as well as the Inmates. The training that the inmates get will be an enormous benefit to all concerned.

    May be its just like giving training to Bus drivers, conductors which is of no use. Efficiency should come in a person by birth and naturally.

    Our Police force consists of men and women of the "UNIFORM".

    However, from the photographs in the article, their uniform is not uniform.

    So many shades of Khaki !! How can the Police be then called a uniformed force?? It looks ugly and makes a mockery of the word "uniform".

    This is unique to Karnataka and to a certain extent, Kerala as per my knowledge.

    No way this can happen in the police forces of the developed western countries but it doesn't happen even in police forces of the developing countries. Not even in Pakistan, Bangladesh, not to mention the Middle Eastern countries.

    Can Daiji take up this matter and bring it to the attention of higher-ups (whose uniforms too are of different shades).

    Is the force color-blind to Khaki??

    @ Mangalore,different colours are may be according to their grade?Important is whether everybody had understood what he meant and practice it.Where preaching is quite different is than what they practice(d) till now.
