Bengaluru, May 26: Police personnel from across the state, who have decided to take mass leave on June 4 to pressurize the government to meet their long-pending demands, have begun the process of submitting their leave applications.
About 3,000 police personnel in Hassan district, who belong to district reserve, Karnataka state reserve police, civil police etc said they would be submitting applications en masse. The policemen, instead of taking to streets, have decided to seek recourse to this silent method of protest to drive home their demands.
Main grievances of police personnel are wage imparity as compared to neighbouring states, payment of Rs 200 when doing duty on weekly off instead of full day's pay, utilization of services of policemen for attending to house duties of IPS officers, harsh behaviour by higher officials etc.
Senior officials have no clue how to stop the policemen from proceeding on a day's leave. Many at the district level confessed to be under pressure from higher authorities to stop police personnel from taking this step.
In the meanwhile, state home minister, Dr G Parameshwar, said he has no information about this proposed protest. He felt that discipline happens to be the hallmark of police department, and hence it does not behove the police officials to seek recourse to protests.
