Duggu Bai (65) lost her life in this incident. Her daughter-in-law, Vimala (38), has been accused of murdering Duggu.
Duggu and Vimala used to live with Vimala's husband, Srinivas, in a house at Payyarabettu. Sadanand, younger brother of Srinivas, lives a Kadandale. I has been12 years since Vimala married Srinivas, but the couple have no children. Srinivas, who earlier worked for many years for Mescom on daily wage basis, recently joined another work. Vimala rolled bidis to support family finances. All the three in the house were liquor addicts, and therefore, fight between them had become a common occurrence.
On Wednesday evening, both the women, who were drunk, started to quarrel in the courtyard of their house. Vimala got very angry after her mother-in-law commented about her inability to bear a child. She went inside, brought a firewood, and attacked the old woman with it, after which Duggu Bai collapsed to the ground. Srinivas came home at that point, learnt what had happened, and slapped his wife. Vimala could not control her anger and rushed at him with a sickle in hand, at which Srinivas escaped from her and ran away.
Srinivas came back on Thursday morning, saw that his mother had died, and passed on information to brother, Sadanand. Bajpe police went to the spot thereafter, and arrested Vimala. Police personnel said Vimala had confessed to her crime. Bajpe police plan to arrest Srinivas too to question him about his role if any pertaining to this murder.
On the basis of complaint filed by Sadanand, the police have named Srinivas and Vimala in the first information report.
