Udupi, May 29: A national level Udupi Cyclothon 2016 was flagged off by G K Prabhu, director, MIT Manipal on Sunday May 29.
The event is an innovative and fun way of creating environmental and health awareness with the theme 'Save water, Save earth, Pedal earth'
The event has been organised by Udupi events with a mission to foster and promote sports across Udupi district in association with Manipal institute of Technology. The intention of the event is ' to make the shift from cycles being considered as just community vehicles, to cycling becoming a recreational activity.'
Nearly 120 cyclists took participated in this event.
The pro-race for men of 50 kilometres commenced from End Point in Manipal. From there it will go through the route Perampally, Santhekatte, Kemmannu, Malpe, Katpadi, Alevoor, Rampur and reach Manipal.
The event is also supported by the district administration and Udupi district police.
Superintendent of police (SP) Annamalai participated in the event as cyclist.
