Mangaluru, May 29: Unknown thieves entered a house near Lions Club at Jappinamogaru on the night of Saturday, May 28 and decamped with gold ornaments valued at Rs 3.5 lac.
The incident happened at the house named 'Ganesh Nilaya' belonging to Sandhya Nayak.
Sandhya Nayak, a widow, had gone to her mother's house with children on Saturday. When she came back on Sunday, she saw that the front door of the house was broken. Upon checking it was discovered that the thieves had entered the house and taken gold ornaments of 5 sovereigns belonging to her children as well as 3.5 sovereign gold ornaments reserved for Lord Ganesha idol.
It is said that the family people are devotees of Lord Ganesh and they keep the idol of him during Ganesh Chaturthi every year. The said ornaments were made for the idol for adoration during the Ganesh Chaturthi. In addition to the ornaments, other items kept for the adoration of the idol were also stolen with Rs 15,000 cash.
The thieves had entered the upper part of the house also to check for valuables.
Canine squad and finger experts arrived at the crime scene with the police personnel.
A case stands registered at Mangaluru rural police station.
