Ambulance collides with tempo - Patient survives, driver dies

Bhatkal, May 30: In a tragic incident, an ambulance driver was killed on spot when the ambulance collided with Mahindra tempo head on at Handigon, four kilometres away from Kumta near here on Monday, May 30.


The deceased ambulance driver is identified as Venketesh Mahadev Hulswar (42). Three other persons were seriously injured in the fatal accident which took place in the evening.

It is learnt that the ambulance was going to Manipal from Gokarna. A seriously ill person was being taken to Manipal in the ambulance. The patient was reportedly saved as he was shifted to another ambulance and taken to hospital after accident.

The tempo was coming from Honnavar to Kumta.

A case has been registered at Kumta police station and investigations are on.

    I have no words to express but say that the deceased soul will rest in eternal peace as this fatal accident happened and the driver was killed. At this time, I presume the ambulance was rushing patient to a hospital at high speed, which is obvious and this accident happened. Even in US ambulance and fire trucks are given first priority before any other vehicles. All other vehicles come to a stop or give way to these emergency vehicles.

    Sad news to hear.Rest in peace .first of all omni is not a suitable as an ambulance vehicle .its hard to get that vehicle into control when it is at top speed tats above 95/hr .its not safe when it hits a heavy vehicle .the real thing is there are pvt ambulance outside at KMC where there are many omni ambulances .people should get aware of safety during long distances distance from gokarna to Manipal is too long there are 108 services ryt why don't call 108 where you get ambulance service by traveller vehicle that's fit and has lot of facilities. My thinking is when it comes to emergency we take any vehicle may be it's a omni .I mean when the situation is serious now we can't regret what has happened right. This incident gives ua a view about safety :-) hope everyone gets aware .Call 108 for emergency :-) no matter u lose some money use some thinking

    It is the responsibility of citizens to give way to ambulances, but now a days ambulance drivers are very rash, they install 6 to 8 powerful headlights to their vehicles, never bother to dim to the up coming traffic. They are to save life, but they should not risk life of co users of road by rash driving..... Government should take notice of this & issue proper guidelines & training and to ambulance drivers....a strict headlight rule should be implemented otherwise it is impossible to drive in night.

    This is the reason why omni based ambulances should be banned. First of all these omni's are not at all stable vehicles at high speeds and over that they are extremely fragile. Added to that is the rash driving of ambulances. These drivers should be properly trained to drive fast and safe adhering to all the laws and regulations of the road. You cannot kill someone on road to save another life.

    It is very sad that this incident should open up eyes of Public. So far how many ambulances ended up in accidents. To save one life more end up dead.
    Ambulance drivers think that they own the road with Beacon light. In Mangalore they carry little Children to Kindergarten in Bendoor. They carry Nursing students to School in Paldane. Drivers go fast through junctions even when there is traffic jam. It is a thought,some restrictions should be imposed on the Ambulance drivers before a tragedy hits Mangalore street,taking life of few.

    We need to give way for Ambulance, rather expecting them go slow...
    In the above case, maxi-cab should have given a free way to Ambulance to help the sick person to reach Manipal..
