Mangalore, Nov 5: Lourdes Central School, Mangalore scripted a new Chess history for Karnataka Chess by winning the Championship in Under 14 category in National CBSE Chess Championship 2007- 08 organised by Modern School, Nanganallur, Chennai from 29th October to 3rd November 2007.
The team comprising Nihal Manjunath (Captain), Adith Jagadish, Yashas Salian, Rammohan Bhandari and Akash Harendranath, Veerendra Alva ( Manager) scored 19.5 points in 6 rounds. It was a 2 way tie along with South Zone Champions and the top seeded Jawahar School, Chennai. The tie break score of 82.5 points by Lourdes against the 80 points by Jawahar helped Lourdes Central School clinch the title. Unbeaten Adith Jagadish and Yashas Salian also won the Board prizes in 3rd and 4th Board respectively with their individual scores of 6 and 5 points respectively.
This is a maiden major chess title in CBSE Chess events for a Mangalorean team. The team won the title irrespective of participation of strong teams from all over India and also including some foreign teams (CBSE).
