Bengaluru, Jun 14: State assembly speaker, Kagodu Thimmappa, sounded unhappy about the way election was held to both Rajya Sabha and legislative council from the state. He is of the opinion that developments like these are detrimental to the interests of democracy.
Speaking to media persons at his room in Vidhan Soudha on Monday June 13, Kagodu agreed that these elections were held successfully. "But the way some things were conducted do not appear to be in consonance with democratic principles. My inner voice says these things are detrimental to democracy. All political parties need to bring changes. I request the concerned not to take my advice lightly," he requested.
Thimmappa said he had since the beginning supported the idea of providing support to activists who worked for the party, and help them grow in stature. "In spite of my sincere advice to strengthen democratic forces by supporting such people, no one put to practice my advice. I continue to feel sad for the fact that genuine activists have not been given importance," he explained.
About cross voting by eight JDS legislators, he said he is not empowered to take action against such things as election does not fall within the purview of house. "Only disciplinary matters which occur within the house falls within my jurisdiction. So far, I have not received any complaint. If I receive any complaint, we will scrutinize it and send the send it to the election commission. The commission is empowered to take action under anti defection law," he explained.
Kagodu expressed his anguish at the wrong things being followed by people's representatives. He said he is pained at the power money wields as against policies and principles. He opined that people doing real estate business should remain where they are, and that it was wrong on such people to become people's representatives, indirectly referring to Farooq, who contested Rajya Sabha election from JDS and, K C Ramamirthy, retired police officer, fielded by Congress.
