Udupi, Jul 6: Sea erosion continues to be life threatening during the monsoon at Malpe beach. In a bid to protect locals from the raging sea, the officials are finally erecting temporary wall with boulders.
Recently, the laid interlocks were washed away due to constant sea erosion. The current tide table reports a 1.65 metre height wave appearing.
Finally, district authority and beach committee are taking up things seriously and erecting a temporary wall to prevent sea erosion. The work is in full swing. The officials are putting massive boulders at shore.
Many coconut trees have been uprooted due to continuous rain. Huge waves have damaged bridge which connects Odabandeshwara.
According to the CMC engineer Jagadish Bhat, “Nearly 150-200 meters of long sea wall was washed away. It is really a challenge for us to keep the protecting wall as well as save the lives of residents. Every year, the same problem is reported during monsoon.”
Speaking to Daijiworld, port engineer PS Rathod said, “Considering the emergency-like situation, we are building temporary stone wall to prevent public life. Last year, we had constructed wall near Hanuman Bhajana Mandira and Furtado Guest House. This year the intensity of wave is too high and it was unpredictable.”
Recently Daijiworld had reported the plight of sea erosion. As a result of this, Tahsildar of Udupi instructed the concerned department to take immediate action.
The government needs to find permanent solution. otherwise it would endanger the lives of residents as well as tourists near Malpe beach.
