Bangladesh bans Zakir Naik's Peace TV

Dhaka, Jul 10 (PTI): Bangladesh government today banned the broadcasting of India-based controversial preacher Zakir Naik's Peace TV channel after reports that his "provocative" speeches inspired some of the militants who carried out the country's worst terror attack at a cafe here.

The decision to ban the Mumbai-based preacher's 'Peace TV Bangla' was taken during a special meeting of Cabinet Committee on Law and Order, Industry Minister AAmir Hossain Amu, who chaired the meeting said.

In the meeting, attended by senior ministers and top security officials, it was also decided to monitor the sermons given during the Friday prayers to check whether any provocative lectures are delivered, Amu told reporters.

Naik's speeches are believed to have inspired some of the Bangladeshi militants, who killed 22 people, mostly foreigners, at an upscale restaurant in Dhaka on July 1.

The government also appealed to the Imams in the country to deliver lectures in line with real Islamic ideology of denouncing terorism and extremism, the minister said.

Besides senior ministers, the meeting was attended by chief of police and head of the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), paramilitary border guards and top officials of different security agencies.

Deployment of additional security forces at export processing zone was also ordered.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan had yesterday said that Bangladesh's intelligence agencies were investigating the Islamic preacher Naik.

"He is on our security scanner... Our intelligence agencies are investigating his activities as his lectures appeared provocative," Khan had told PTI.

Khan said the investigators were also probing Naik's financial transactions in Bangladesh.

One of the slain attackers of the terrorist attack in Dhaka's high-security Gulshan area, the 22-year-old Rohan Imtiaz quoted Naik in a Facebook post in January this year where he urged "all Muslims to be terrorists."

Twenty-two people, including 17 foreigners, were killed in the brutal late-night attack. Six days later, militants attacked police guarding the largest Eid gathering in Bangladesh and killed three more people.

The activities of Naik's Mumbai-based Islamic Research Foundation are also under the scanner of Indian Home Ministry amid allegations that funds from abroad received by it have been spent on political activities and inspiring people towards radical views.

The Maharashtra government has also ordered a probe into the sermons by the 50-year-old televangelist that has kicked up a storm.

Britain and Canada have banned Naik from visiting the two countries several years ago while Malaysia banned his lectures fearing that they could instigate inter-racial tensions.

Experts said Naik could not be accused of openly inciting terror but his preaching were a heady mix of ingredients which could abet radicalisation of the extreme kinds.

Zakir Naik is a good orator, like Modi. These days forceful orators have very good audiences and fans.

If there is any evidence against him, having instigated terrorism. He must be tried as terrorist.

These days it is fashion among most religious preachers of all religions to belittle others to promote their faith. This strategy is fast seller. Pick something from here and there, quote it out of context and pass an judgement. Exactly like how Arnab Goswamy does in his shows.

So, deliberation is the key. Kannare kandaruuu parambarisie noodabeeku. This is a kannada proverb that tells, evenif you see something from your own eyes, dont jump into conclusions, evaluate it first.

Poor Bangladesh...feel sorry for their chamchagiri with facist powera like Israel and allies. Shame..
Those countries enjoying the divide and rule policy and getting divided for example UK is no more UK
Those countries trying to dismantle other countries are geting dismantled for example USSR is left with Russia
    Many more on waiting list
Regarding Dr Zakr Naik, no one can prove a single alleggation against him because all his debates, lectures are 100% trasnparent and available. He will never do any close door meetings like cowrads. Those cowards using the name of Islam and spilling bloods. Shame on them . Crusaders, dictators...and jokers digging their own grave like pharoahs

When will our dear motherland do a little bit of something to protect its citizens from preachers of terrorism, terrorists, their supporters and most importantly their sources of money. It is estimated that Zakir has been receiving in excess of $50 million dollars each year, as Zakat donations have been channelled to him.

Same Bangladesh will reverse their stand but it may take some time mark my words...just like how bangla daily "Daily star" reversed their stand after giving false information...His YouTube videos are still available online..youths have abandoned T.V now it is generation of internet so it seldom matters.
If India bans his show then it is good move ...it can be used as bench mark for other faiths also but matter is whether law will be equally applied ..
One thing ZN is not hate monger he never instigated riots or used derogatory words on other faith or called for exclusion, expulsion or massacre of any community..He simply explains other religion using their scriptures using Islam as benchmark...this may hurt other faith....but it is bitter truth which people may find it difficult to swallow..
Terrorism was just a excuse to ban his mission...He believes veda, bible, Quran comes from same source
I don't want to speak on hate mongers who are still our ministers what can be done if govt runs behind a preacher who never instigated riot, terrorism or never used much abusive words like others but falsely accuse him...

Surely they must have studied his speeches, its impact on their citizens and taken calculated decision.
Surely they may have analyzed impact over country's image all over the world and on its citizens!

By the way Shiekh Haseena and her Govt is acting hastily based on Media trail. This will surely prove their govt costly in the upcoming election. I believe this is gonna be the permanent end of road to politics for the current leaders.

Every country has courts to decide, which gives judgement based on valid proof not based on some media trail and allegation. Insha Allah this ban will be revoked soon.

I have watched almost all videos of Dr. Zakir Naik. I can surely say he is not a man who endorse terrorism. His words are cherry picked and interpreted out of context. A small example is here below.
"If Osama is fighting against the enemies of Islam, I am with him." This line was picked up by the media. Dr. Naik continued,"but he is not." Dr. Naik wanted to say, Osama was killing innocents and he is against Osama.

Please don't get me wrong. I also say here that Dr. Zakir Naik is no saint either. His speeches are not sweet honey combs.
He mocks at Christianity, he mocks at other religions and rituals of other faiths. These videos can definitely influence young minds, developing a hatred towards the followers of other religion. When some one thinks their religion is superior than others, he turns fanatic.
Let us not make Dr. Naik another terrorist. Instead let us ban his channel, so that more young minds are not filled with venom of religion.

Nawaz, this is what exactly reflect your mindset.
You feel knife is there for halal only. Please understand it can also cut vegetables.
Similarly lot of countries are using atomic energy for peaceful purpose like power etc..
Why guys always think about destruction.
Everything will be fine once you start thinking all religions have their own merits and stop 'holier than thou' attitude. This is what exactly Zakir Naik was not doing!!
He can tell best parts of Islam ,but dont ridicule others becoz, there are weakness in it to.
People try to be offensive when they are on weak grounds as they consider offense is best way to defend.
This is what fragile religious leaders are doing when they feel of losing their entity.
