Udupi: Catholic Sabha Kolalgiri plants paddy saplings to feed needy

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Jul 13: There is talk that farmers are turning their back from agriculture. But the Catholic Sabha unit at Sacred Heart Church in Kolalgiri near here has started a unique project of growing paddy in a barren field and distributing the rice after processing in the mill among poor people across all religions.

Nearly 60 members of Catholic Sabha Kolalgiri led by president Ashwin Roche got down in the 55 cents barren field near Arooru Kenjebail belonging to Vijayadas Shetty on Sunday, July 10 and planted paddy saplings. The members participated with vigour and enthusiasm.

The organization has spent between Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 for the purpose. Local resident and treasurer of the organization, Vincent D' Souza will look after the fields on a daily basis.

The members will participate in cutting the full grown paddy. The grass will be distributed to byre or the needy. The paddy will be sent to the rice mill for processing. Nearly 10 quintals of rice is expected as yield. Catholic Sabha has ventured into such an experiment for the first time and intends to continue it every year.

Catholic Sabha Kolalgiri which is completing 25 years has 225 members. Several pro-society programmes such as toilets for the poor, public bus stands and podiums have been taken up on the occasion of silver jubilee.

Udupi diocese president Valerian Fernandes, zonal president Steven Prakash Louis, Kolalgiri church vice president of pastoral council Navin Fernandes, secretary Queenie Mary, local panchayat president Raju Kulal and owner of the field Vijayadas Shetty visited and encouraged the endeavour.

What a waste of time and energy. Do some maths...already spent Rs.10000 and they will spend another Rs.10,000 till crop is harvested. 10quintals of paddy will yield around 350kgs rice. Rs.38*350 = rs.13,300. Total cost of production Rs.20,000 - 13300 = Total loss Rs. 6700. Add time spent by all the volunteers and their families...So total actual loss will be more than Rs.50,000 in this publicity venture. Good to see nature photos but nothing else. India needs to move on from subsistence farming. Once families move out of subsistence farming then only poverty can be abolished. People are better off working elsewhere than growing their own food. Indian mind set to change and people should avoid doing subsistence farming (growing own food).

Here it comes illiterate farm labours and illiterate farmers working on the paddy works looks good, taking pictures, showing greenery very interesting. But who wants to work on mud. farmers own children leaving their land empty and working in gulf or bombay.
Present modern society family cannot survive with 10 or 20 quintal rice.

This is very inspiring, through making use of the barren land and producing food for the poor and needy of all religions. This what JESUS taught us to do.

Preaching the gospel-healing the sick and feeding the hungry were the three ministries of JESUS while he was on earth. Besides, HE did openly challenge the religious hypocrisy of the so called religious hierarchy of that time.

Good pictures... Cultivation of barren land is good work by catholic sabha. I appreciate their efforts and team work. But I do not believe in giving free rice for anyone. Instead sell the rice and use money for poor children education. Giving free rice gives benefits of doubts for people around and creates unnecessary trouble.

    Its a truly appreciable act.

However, I would like to look into the other dimension. Cost already incurred is around 10k, another 10k assuming for rest till the finish.

The net gain could be around 5 to 7k. Is it not why our farming is dying today, despite having taken all the risks?

Now, it is equally important to take care of this field. Usually grass and weeds grow along with paddy. Attention should be given to weed out the field. Labour is ours and fruit is God's. Let us try our best and hope for THE BEST.

This act of Catholic Sabha is noble and praise worthy. Those who are healthy and benefit from this project also made to participate in this cultivation. More and more barren lands should be utilized for cultivation and for growing vegetables. May the good God bless this labour of human hands abundantly. Thank you and God bless each and every one of us.
